Southampton FC Targets Morgan Guilavogui Amid Transfer Challenge
Southampton FC is actively pursuing a deal to sign winger Morgan Guilavogui from French club Lens this January, but faces a significant hurdle with the player’s €4 million (£3.5 million) asking price. The 27-year-old has drawn interest not only from Southampton but also from his former club, St Pauli, as both teams seek to strengthen their attacking options.
The Saints, currently positioned 15th in the English Championship, are targeting promotion to the Premier League this season. However, with just 26 matches played, they find themselves eight points adrift of the play-off spots. Southampton has until February 2 to make any moves that could enhance their chances of finishing in the top six this campaign.
Guilavogui has made 15 appearances in Ligue 1 this season, starting three times and contributing one goal. His recent participation in the Africa Cup of Nations has added to his visibility in the transfer market, but his current club is reportedly unwilling to negotiate on their asking price.
Southampton’s initial offer for Guilavogui was rejected, prompting the club to reassess their approach as they look to secure a player who can bolster their attack. The competition from St Pauli, which aims to bring him back to the Bundesliga, adds pressure on Southampton to act swiftly.
Potential Impact on Southampton’s Squad
The addition of Guilavogui could provide crucial competition for Southampton’s attacking lineup. His versatility allows him to play both as a striker and on the wing, which could be beneficial for Manager Tonda Eckert. With Damion Downs recently removed from the squad, an opportunity exists for another attacker to make an impact.
Last season, while on loan in Germany, Guilavogui demonstrated his capabilities by scoring six goals and providing two assists in 25 appearances in the Bundesliga. His experience in top-flight football could offer the firepower necessary for Southampton to climb the Championship table.
Despite the potential advantages, it is essential for Southampton to consider their financial strategy carefully. With Guilavogui approaching his 28th birthday in a few months, a loan deal might be a more prudent option for the club if they wish to secure his services without overcommitting financially.
The Saints will next face Hull City in an important home fixture on January 17, where they will aim to improve their standing in the league. The outcome of this match could significantly influence Southampton’s transfer decisions as they seek to enhance their squad for the remainder of the season.
