Steelers’ Aaron Rodgers Contemplates Future After Season Finale
PITTSBURGH – As the Pittsburgh Steelers prepare for a crucial matchup against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, quarterback Aaron Rodgers is focusing solely on the present, despite the looming uncertainty regarding his future. With the regular season on the line in this win-or-go-home scenario, Rodgers addressed his situation candidly on Wednesday, acknowledging that he has not contemplated a return to the Steelers beyond this season.
At 42 years old and with a one-year contract set to expire, Rodgers reflected on the reality he faces after Week 18. “I’m thinking about this week, but obviously I’m 42 years old and I’m on a one-year deal,” he stated. “Whenever the season ends, I’ll be a free agent. So that’ll give me a lot of options if I still want to play.”
Despite his uncertain future, Rodgers expressed gratitude for his time in Pittsburgh, where he signed a one-year, $13.65 million contract in June. He described his experience with the Steelers as fulfilling, stating, “I’ve enjoyed this experience, and everybody in Pittsburgh has been fantastic to me on and off the field.”
Rodgers had previously suggested that the 2025 season would likely mark the end of his storied career. In an interview on “The Pat McAfee Show,” he remarked, “Yeah, I’m pretty sure this is it. That’s why we just did a one-year deal.” He emphasized the significance of finishing his career with a team that represents one of the cornerstones of the NFL.
Reflecting on a Memorable Season
As the season winds down, Rodgers acknowledged the friendships and memories he has built during his time with the Steelers. “You always think about the what if and the alternative timelines of your life,” he said. “But if I hadn’t taken this path, I never would have met so many guys in the locker room who I now call close friends.”
The quarterback has played a pivotal role in guiding the Steelers to a 9-7 record this season, keeping them in contention for the AFC North title. With 3,028 yards, 23 touchdowns, and a completion rate of 65.6%, Rodgers has been a significant contributor. Yet, he has also encountered challenges, including a subpar performance against the Cleveland Browns in Week 17, where he completed just 53.8% of his passes.
Despite these setbacks, Rodgers maintains a positive mindset. “I don’t have a lot of stinkers back-to-back over the years,” he noted. “So it’s the same mindset every week, same approach. Just expect greatness.”
Decision-Making Process Ahead
As the Steelers prepare for their pivotal game against the Ravens, Rodgers indicated that he would consult with his wife before making any decisions about his career. He expressed a desire for his choice to be based on a passion for the game rather than physical limitations. “I hope I can get through this stretch and feel good physically so that’s not in the conversation,” he said.
With the stakes high in the upcoming game, the Steelers are looking to Rodgers to lead them to victory. As he approaches the end of his one-year deal, the quarterback finds himself at a crossroads, contemplating his future while focusing on the immediate challenge ahead. The outcome of this game could significantly influence not only the team’s playoff hopes but also the next chapter in Rodgers’ storied career.
