Tessmann’s Rise Sparks Competition for USMNT 2026 World Cup Spots
As the European club season progresses, players from the U.S. men’s national team (USMNT) are making their mark, with the countdown to the highly anticipated 2026 World Cup officially underway. With just 260 days until the tournament kicks off on home soil, the performance of these athletes will play a crucial role in shaping the final roster.
Several USMNT players have experienced mixed fortunes this season, particularly during the opening matches of the UEFA Champions League. While some have struggled to find their rhythm, others, like Christian Pulisic, have excelled. Pulisic, now with AC Milan, has already netted five goals across all competitions this season, reaffirming his status as a key figure for the national team.
Among the players making headlines is Tanner Tessmann, who has enjoyed a strong start at Lyon. Last weekend, he scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory against Angers, helping Lyon climb to the top of the Ligue 1 standings, just behind AS Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain on goal differential. Tessmann’s form raises questions about his potential return to the USMNT after being absent since the Concacaf Nations League in March. Manager Mauricio Pochettino will need to consider whether Tessmann can challenge for a starting position, particularly as a backup for Tyler Adams.
The competition is fierce among USMNT midfielders, with Malik Tillman also making strides at Bayer Leverkusen. After a challenging match against F.C. København, where he struggled to influence the game, Tillman rebounded with a stellar performance against Borussia Mönchengladbach, scoring his second league goal of the season. His tactical repositioning by manager Kasper Hjulmand proved beneficial, indicating his growing importance in both club and national teams.
Pulisic’s recent performances further solidify his role as the USMNT’s key attacking player. In a remarkable week, he scored two goals and assisted on another in a 3-0 win over Udinese, followed by another goal in a Coppa Italia match against Lecce. With a record 59 goals in Europe’s top five leagues, Pulisic’s health will be critical as he aims to maintain his form ahead of the World Cup.
The dynamics of the USMNT’s forward roster continue to fluctuate. Folarin Balogun, who initially seemed to secure his position following a strong performance against Japan, faced setbacks with a lackluster showing in a 4-1 defeat to Club Brugge. His benching in favor of Mika Biereth, who scored in a 5-2 victory against Metz, raises concerns about Balogun’s standing in the squad. Nevertheless, his unique skill set ensures he remains a valuable option for the national team.
As the USMNT prepares for the World Cup, updates to the ESPN USMNT Big Board highlight player performances. Key metrics include minutes played and FotMob ratings, providing insights into the readiness of potential squad members.
Goalkeeper Matt Turner has logged 630 minutes this season with a rating of 7.1, while Zack Steffen has contributed 2,160 minutes at Colorado Rapids with a rating of 6.9. Meanwhile, defenders like Chris Richards and Joe Scally are also making their case for selection, with Scally’s recent performance in a 3-4-3 setup showcasing his attacking potential.
As the national team approaches its next camp, players like Tim Weah and Antonee Robinson are addressing their roles within the squad. Weah’s versatility as a right wing-back has been beneficial, particularly during critical matches, while Robinson is working to reclaim his starting position after an injury.
The stage is set for these players to solidify their places in the USMNT ahead of the World Cup. With competition heating up and performances closely monitored, fans can expect an exciting lead-up to the tournament, where key decisions will ultimately define the team’s composition.
