Titans Open to Trades but Off-Limits for Key Players
The Tennessee Titans are actively exploring trade options as the NFL trade deadline approaches. However, sources confirmed to ESPN on Saturday that the team is not considering deals for their key players, including rookie quarterback Cam Ward and defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons. Currently sitting at the bottom of the AFC South with a record of 1-6, the Titans recently made a coaching change by firing Brian Callahan and appointing Mike McCoy as the interim head coach.
While the Titans are open to listening to offers for several players, including tight end Chig Okonkwo, cornerback Roger McCreary, and outside linebacker Arden Key, the franchise is committed to keeping both Ward and Simmons off the trading block. Ward, selected as the first overall pick in this year’s draft, is seen as a vital part of the team’s future. Simmons, a three-time Pro Bowler, is one of the few remaining players from the Titans’ successful campaigns that secured consecutive AFC South titles in 2020 and 2021.
Simmons, 28, is currently sidelined due to a hamstring injury but remains a central figure in the Titans’ plans. Defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson praised Simmons, emphasizing his irreplaceable skill set, stating, “You can’t replace Jeff Simmons. He’s played as a best three technique as anyone in the National Football League this year.” Simmons is under contract for two more years on a four-year, $94 million extension signed in 2023.
Chad Brinker, in his first season as president of team operations for the Titans, has expressed a desire to secure at least 12 picks in the top 100 over the next three drafts. As the trade deadline approaches on November 4, McCoy emphasized the team’s immediate focus on their next opponent, the Indianapolis Colts. “We’re not worrying about down the road,” McCoy said. “It’s about this week. That’s the No. 1 thing. Everything else will take care of itself down the road, but … our focus right now is going to Indy and finding a way to win the game.”
With the Titans navigating a challenging season, their strategy moving forward will likely shape the team’s direction in the coming years. As they prepare for the Colts, the decisions made in the next few days could significantly impact the Titans’ roster and future.
