Troy Aikman Joins Miami Dolphins as Consultant for GM Search
The Miami Dolphins have enlisted the expertise of Hall of Fame quarterback and ESPN analyst Troy Aikman as a consultant for their search for a new general manager. This advisory role, while not permanent, aims to provide the organization with a respected external perspective during the transition. Dolphins ownership sought Aikman’s insight due to his extensive experience and established relationships within the NFL.
Aikman, who has over three decades of experience as both a player and a broadcaster, is expected to lend valuable guidance throughout the selection process for the franchise’s next general manager. His involvement is particularly timely following the mutual parting of ways between the Dolphins and former general manager Chris Grier on October 31, 2023. Grier, who had been with the organization since 2000 and served as GM since 2016, left the Dolphins after the team started the season with a disappointing record of 2-7.
Current Team Dynamics and Upcoming Challenges
Under the leadership of head coach Mike McDaniel, the Dolphins have since improved their performance, recording a 5-2 record following Grier’s departure. As they approach the season finale against the New England Patriots, Miami’s overall record stands at 7-9. The Dolphins will be looking to conclude their season on a positive note, especially in light of their ongoing struggles in the playoffs. Miami currently holds the longest active playoff win drought in the NFL, having not secured a postseason victory in 25 years.
While Aikman’s advisory role does not conflict with his responsibilities as a commentator for Monday Night Football, he is set to be in the booth for an important matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers this Saturday night. This game will determine the NFC’s No. 1 seed, showcasing Aikman’s continued commitment to both his advisory function and broadcasting duties.
In the interim, Champ Kelly is serving as the Dolphins’ interim general manager, tasked with overseeing operations as the team navigates this critical period. The organization now sets its sights on finding a leader who can help steer the Dolphins back to competitive success in the NFL.
