Allen Gallery to Undergo Major Renovation, Closing for a Year

The Allen Gallery in Alton will close for a minimum of one year starting December 31, 2023, as it embarks on a significant transformation funded by a £1.78 million grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This initiative marks the second phase of an extensive renovation aimed at enhancing the historic building located on Church Street, improving accessibility, and preserving its internationally recognized ceramics collection.

The Hampshire Cultural Trust is spearheading the project, which focuses on two main areas: community engagement and building improvements. A spokesperson for the trust explained, “Following the completion of the project’s development phase in 2024, we are now under way with the delivery phase, which has two core focus areas.” These include the continuation of community activities and the enhancement of the gallery’s physical structure to ensure environmental sustainability.

The planned renovations will involve a series of capital works, necessitating the gallery’s closure during this time. The work is expected to span throughout 2026, with the gallery anticipated to reopen in early 2027.
