Church Charity Withdraws Proposal for Whitchurch Pub Conversion
A proposal by the Free Believers in Christ Fellowship to convert the former Highgate pub in Whitchurch into a 10-bedroom home has been withdrawn. This decision comes after the local planning authorities expressed concerns about potential traffic congestion associated with the proposed change of use.
Background of the Highgate Pub
The Highgate, a building dating back to the 1930s, ceased operations as a pub in 1996. Following its closure, permission was granted for the site to be repurposed for use as the base for the local removals business, Denmans. After Denmans relocated, the property was acquired by the Free Believers in Christ Fellowship, a church organization that currently operates 13 bases across England, with its headquarters located in Whitchurch.
In 2023, the charity announced plans to transform the Highgate into a conference venue featuring 11 en-suite bedrooms and a dining hall, along with the construction of a community hall. This proposal aimed to enhance local community facilities and provide additional accommodation options.
Planning Concerns and Withdrawal of Proposal
However, planning officers at Shropshire Council determined that the use of the facility as proposed would likely result in a significant increase in vehicular traffic, which posed a safety issue given the limited capacity of the existing 17-space car park. Consequently, the planning application was rejected on grounds of highway safety.
The church submitted a revised proposal in October 2023 that included detailed drawings and floor plans. Despite these efforts, on December 16, 2023, Shropshire Council confirmed that the application had been officially withdrawn, meaning that no further determinations will be made regarding the proposed development.
This withdrawal underscores the challenges faced by organizations seeking to repurpose existing buildings in areas where traffic and parking constraints are a concern. The Free Believers in Christ Fellowship will now need to reassess its plans for the Highgate as it navigates the complexities of local zoning and planning regulations.
