Discover Scotland’s Luxury: A Stay at Mar Hall Hotel
The recently renovated Mar Hall Hotel near Glasgow offers a luxurious escape for both locals and international visitors. Having undergone a significant refurbishment costing £20 million, this five-star resort is redefining what it means to stay in a hotel close to an airport. Located just ten minutes from Glasgow Airport, Mar Hall provides an unexpected blend of opulence and Scottish charm.
When I arrived at the hotel just before sunset on a winter evening, the soft golden glow over the River Clyde and surrounding hills created an enchanting atmosphere. Once a private estate commissioned by the 11th Lord Blantyre, Mar Hall has had various incarnations, including a military hospital during World War I. Today, it stands as a testament to luxurious Scottish hospitality, seamlessly merging history with modern elegance.
Revamped Design Reflects Heritage
The recent renovation has brought Mar Hall into the contemporary era while paying homage to its rich past. Interior designer Jim Hamilton, who leads the project through his firm Graven, emphasized the desire to maintain a sense of home and warmth. His team has incorporated elements from the hotel’s Victorian roots, such as potted palm trees in the grand entry hall and custom wall paneling showcasing seasonal paintings by Scottish artist Nichol Wheatley.
The design features bold colors and patterns that evoke the Victorian era, yet feel refreshingly modern. The aesthetic successfully balances sumptuousness with a welcoming atmosphere. Visitors are greeted by friendly staff who enhance the overall experience, ensuring that guests feel at ease despite the resort’s luxurious setting.
Luxurious Accommodations and Fine Dining
During my visit in early December, the hotel was adorned with festive decorations, creating a warm holiday ambiance. I was welcomed by a receptionist who eagerly led me to the Gallery, the heart of the hotel. The space, complete with plush seating and a marble bar, was indeed as stunning as advertised.
I was given access to the Erskine Grand Suite, priced at £1,125 per night. This suite features an expansive sitting room, a grand piano, and breathtaking views of the golf course and River Clyde. The meticulous attention to detail in the design, including well-lit custom bookcases, added to the luxurious experience.
Dining at Mar Hall is equally impressive. The Slàinte bar, with its cozy ambiance, is a perfect place to unwind. The dinner menu featured classic Scottish dishes, including smoked salmon, tender beef, and sticky toffee pudding. Breakfast offered a continental spread alongside hot options, including a full Scottish breakfast and eggs Benedict. I particularly enjoyed the ‘rise & shine crumpet’ with Argyll smoked salmon and scrambled eggs.
A Range of Amenities and Future Plans
Set in a sprawling 240-acre estate, Mar Hall boasts an 18-hole golf course and a spa equipped with a swimming pool, saunas, and steam rooms. Other facilities include a gym, games room, and a private screening room, making it an appealing destination for relaxation and recreation.
Looking ahead, Andy Roger, the resort director, revealed plans for further enhancements, including a new clubhouse and a cutting-edge indoor-outdoor spa. Mar Hall’s efforts to position itself as a world-class destination are evident, especially after being ranked among the top 20 resorts in Europe by readers of Condé Nast Traveler in 2023.
While it may face competition from renowned establishments like Gleneagles, Mar Hall is carving out its niche. The combination of luxurious accommodations, excellent dining, and a commitment to preserving its heritage makes it a noteworthy choice for both residents and visitors seeking a memorable stay in Scotland.
Reservations for rooms and packages can be made through the hotel’s official website, with prices starting from £292. As I departed, I found myself already anticipating a future visit, a sign of a truly exceptional hotel experience.
