On January 1, 2026, authorities apprehended four individuals engaged in illegal fishing activities at Skadar Lake, located in Montenegro. The operation, conducted by the Skadar Lake National Park protection service, took place under challenging weather conditions characterized by unusually low temperatures.
The action was part of a coordinated effort to combat illegal fishing practices in the area. According to the press release from the National Parks of Montenegro, the suspects were caught in the regions of Vrbovca and Milića Livade. During the operation, officials temporarily seized two vessels, two outboard motors, two nets, two fuel tanks, and a significant quantity of fish.
The National Parks of Montenegro has emphasized the importance of protecting the region’s biodiversity. The park is known for its rich aquatic life, making it a target for illegal fishing activities. In light of this incident, authorities encourage the public to report any illegal actions. Citizens can contact the control and monitoring service of the Public Enterprise National Parks of Montenegro at 067 000 825.
The commitment to preserving the natural environment is critical for local communities and the economy, particularly in areas reliant on tourism and fishing. Authorities continue to monitor Skadar Lake closely to ensure compliance with fishing regulations and to protect the lake’s diverse ecosystem.
With ongoing efforts and community involvement, the authorities aim to deter illegal fishing and promote sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and local livelihoods.
