Hamilton Struggles to Adapt at Ferrari as 2025 Season Challenges Mount
Lewis Hamilton faced significant challenges during the 2025 Formula 1 season, marking one of the most difficult years of his career. Transitioning from Mercedes, where he spent 12 years, to Ferrari posed numerous difficulties, particularly as he competed against teammate Charles Leclerc, who has been with the Scuderia since 2019. Despite his struggles, Hamilton’s performance peaked during the China Sprint, where the Ferrari SF-25 demonstrated its strongest capabilities.
The SF-25 struggled with consistency throughout the season and underwent a suspension adjustment after a disqualification later in the year. Hamilton remains hopeful that the upcoming car will better reflect his driving style and influence.
Challenges with Ferrari’s Simulator and Equipment
Throughout the 2025 season, Hamilton often remarked on the novelty of driving the Ferrari at various circuits for the first time. The simulator at Ferrari’s Maranello facility should have been invaluable in this regard, allowing him to familiarize himself with the car’s handling. However, according to F1 pundit Ralf Schumacher, Hamilton “hardly ever” utilized the simulator, which may explain Leclerc’s apparent comfort in comparison. Reports from ESPN indicate that Hamilton has struggled with the simulator, describing it as a part of his role he genuinely dislikes.
Additionally, adapting to Ferrari’s Brembo brake pads proved challenging for Hamilton, who had relied on Carbon Industrie brakes during his time at Mercedes. This transition added to his difficulties in achieving optimal performance, even with virtual tools. As Hamilton enters the new season at 41, questions regarding his potential retirement are likely to resurface unless he establishes stronger connections within his engineering team, which he felt overlooked him in 2025.
Looking Ahead: Changes and Adjustments
On a more positive note, early reports suggest that new technical director Loic Serra has taken driver feedback seriously, implementing changes to the suspension setup that could benefit Hamilton. The team plans to unveil their new car on January 23, 2026, followed by an initial shakedown session at Fiorano. This development has generated some optimism within the team and among fans, with hopes that the new setup will allow Hamilton to perform at his best.
As Ferrari gears up for the 2026 season, the focus will be on improving car competitiveness and ensuring that Hamilton can adapt more effectively. The challenges of the past season have underscored the importance of teamwork and communication within the engineering department, elements that will be crucial for both Hamilton and Ferrari as they aim to reclaim their position among the top teams in Formula 1.
