Hands Together Ludlow Celebrates Christmas with Community Lunch
A community initiative in Ludlow brought warmth and companionship to individuals spending Christmas alone. The Hands Together Ludlow charity hosted its annual Christmas Day lunch at its kitchen on Lower Galdeford, marking a successful event despite initial concerns regarding limited space.
Food Coordinator Julia Doig expressed her satisfaction with the day’s proceedings, stating, “The Hands Together Christmas Day lunch went very well this year. We were slightly apprehensive about cooking in such a small kitchen, but it proved far less tricky than expected — and everyone ended up with lunch!” The event served as a testament to the community’s spirit, bringing together both volunteers and guests in a festive atmosphere.
Community Support and Festive Atmosphere
The success of the lunch was bolstered by generous donations from local businesses. Ludlow Farmshop contributed turkey crowns, Christmas puddings, and smoked salmon, which allowed volunteers to prepare festive canapés as starters. Additional contributions of fresh vegetables were provided by Myriad Organics and Ludlow Market, ensuring a hearty meal for all attendees.
A dedicated team of volunteers prepared and cooked the meal, with some family groups helping out on Christmas Eve and others working diligently on Christmas Day. “It is thoroughly heart-warming that people are happy to give up their own family time to provide this essential lunch for anyone who would otherwise be alone on Christmas Day,” Julia Doig noted.
Guests enjoyed a traditional Christmas feast that included roast turkey, plentiful gravy, roast potatoes, Brussels sprouts, neeps, bread sauce, and cranberry sauce. The day commenced with carol singing led by a volunteer group, followed by festive activities such as pulling crackers and dessert options of Christmas pudding or trifle, both generously served with whipped cream.
A Day of Joy and Companionship
The event fostered an environment filled with laughter and camaraderie. One volunteer shared his gratitude for being part of the occasion, while another highlighted the joy of witnessing a typically shy guest engaging and laughing with others. “It really was a lovely day,” Julia reflected. “It just couldn’t be better. Thank you to everyone who made it possible.”
The Hands Together Ludlow charity’s Christmas Day lunch not only provided a nutritious meal but also created a sense of community, reminding everyone of the importance of companionship during the holiday season. The overwhelming support from local businesses and volunteers showcases the strong community ties that make events like this successful.
