Homeowners Delay Repairs: Top 10 Household Issues Revealed
A recent survey has uncovered the top ten household repairs that homeowners are most likely to postpone. The findings reveal that issues such as noisy washing machines, overflowing gutters, and dripping taps often remain unaddressed for extended periods. Among the most frequently delayed repairs are slow-draining sinks or showers, reported by 23 percent of respondents, followed by freezers that ice up (16 percent) and coffee machines or kettles needing descaling (15 percent).
The survey, conducted with a sample of 2,000 homeowners, highlights an alarming trend: on average, individuals wait as long as 16 months before addressing these household headaches. The reasons for procrastination vary, with 36 percent citing a lack of urgency, 28 percent indicating they do not have time, and 24 percent concerned about the potential costs associated with repairs.
Significantly, 30 percent of participants acknowledged that their delays have ultimately resulted in higher expenses. According to the research commissioned by the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances (AMDEA), those who have faced financial repercussions from delayed repairs estimated that their issues worsened over time, leading to more extensive and costly fixes.
In particular, 66 percent reported that their household problems escalated, with 35 percent having to replace an appliance entirely and 28 percent experiencing damage to other areas of their homes. The average cost incurred due to these delayed repairs stands at approximately £305.
Many homeowners express frustration with themselves for not addressing issues sooner. A significant 46 percent admitted feeling annoyed, while 34 percent expressed regret over postponing repairs. The study reveals that procrastination remains a common theme, as 52 percent of respondents have previously delayed addressing a household issue, even knowing it would not take much time to resolve.
The top reasons for procrastination include simple avoidance, with 36 percent citing procrastination, 34 percent prioritizing other tasks, and 27 percent lacking confidence in their ability to fix the problem themselves.
In a positive development, the survey indicates a shift in mindset, with over 82 percent of respondents now likely to address household issues immediately to avoid incurring extra costs later. Furthermore, 81 percent agreed that postponing repairs could lead to additional problems or increased expenses in the future.
Despite this awareness, the study uncovered a concerning gap in appliance registration. Approximately 20 percent of homeowners are unsure if they have registered their large appliances with the manufacturer. Reasons for not registering include the belief that their appliance is too old (25 percent), a perceived lack of benefit (24 percent), or simply forgetting to register at the time (16 percent).
While 94 percent of homeowners recognize the importance of maintaining their large appliances, 28 percent admit they rarely check for potential problems. Alarmingly, 24 percent confessed they would not be aware of a product recall for an appliance they own.
Stefan Hay, CEO of AMDEA, emphasizes the importance of addressing small maintenance issues before they escalate. He stated, “Ignoring small maintenance issues can lead to bigger repairs in the future, as they rarely stay small for long. Tackling them early saves time, money, and stress – plus it will keep your home running smoothly.”
As part of the initiative during Register My Appliance Week, AMDEA encourages consumers to register their appliances on their designated web portal to ensure they receive critical safety information. By taking proactive steps, homeowners can avoid unnecessary inconveniences and expenses, ensuring a safer and more efficient home environment.
