Investigation Reveals Oversights in Cambridge Surgeon’s Case

A recent investigation into suspended surgeon Kuldeep Stohr has identified a troubling pattern of “missed opportunities” by the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH) in responding to concerns regarding her surgical practices at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. The inquiry, conducted by the independent organization Verita, was prompted by Stohr’s suspension in March 2024, initially attributed to personal reasons. However, the probe uncovered significant worries about the standard of some of her surgical procedures.

The report highlighted that earlier recommendations could have mitigated the risk of harm to pediatric orthopaedic patients. Specifically, it pointed to a lack of action following a crucial 2016 external review by senior pediatric orthopaedic surgeon Robert Hill, which had already flagged deficiencies in Stohr’s surgical performance. Hill expressed regret over the trust’s failure to act, stating, “I regret to conclude… that the trust failed to draw the correct conclusions from my report, made no effort to check with me… and demonstrated little if any insight into the issues confronting them.”

Despite the challenges, the report indicated that Stohr made attempts to enhance her surgical practices “without the help and support of the trust.” This lack of institutional support has raised concerns about the operational and oversight capabilities of CUH.

In response to the findings, CUH chief executive Roland Sinker issued a public apology, stating that the organization is “deeply sorry” and fully accepts the report’s conclusions. Sinker emphasized, “This should not have happened… we will work tirelessly to deliver our action plan in full to build a safer and more effective organization.”

The implications of the report extend beyond internal reviews. The General Medical Council has imposed restrictions on Stohr, mandating that she must be “closely supervised” in all roles moving forward. Additionally, the Care Quality Commission is currently evaluating potential regulatory actions against CUH in light of the investigation’s findings.
