Iskra Shocks Otrant with Last-Minute Victory in Montenegro League
The final match of the autumn season in the Second Football League of Montenegro took an unexpected turn on December 6, 2023, as Iskra defeated league leaders Otrant 1-0 in Nikšić. Marko Šćepanović scored the decisive goal in the third minute of stoppage time, securing three crucial points for Iskra in their fight against relegation.
Otrant, which had already clinched the “autumn title” in the previous round, faced the disappointment of a late collapse. While they aimed to solidify their position at the top of the league table, the last-minute goal from Šćepanović instead highlighted vulnerabilities in their defense. With this victory, Iskra not only garnered vital points but also showcased their determination to improve in the second half of the season.
Throughout the match, both teams had opportunities to score. Otrant appeared content to settle for a draw as the game neared its conclusion. However, in a dramatic twist, Šćepanović found the back of the net, marking his ninth goal of the season and propelling him to the top of the league’s scoring chart.
The current standings reflect a competitive league, with Otrant still holding the first position despite the setback. The standings are as follows:
1. Otrant – 19 matches, 12 wins, 25 points, Goal Difference: 44:15
2. Grbalj – 19 matches, 11 wins, 35 points, Goal Difference: 30:16
3. Kom – 19 matches, 10 wins, 36 points, Goal Difference: 27:16
4. Rudar – 19 matches, 9 wins, 46 points, Goal Difference: 33:23
5. Iskra – 19 matches, 7 wins, 22 points, Goal Difference: 22:19
6. Berane – 19 matches, 6 wins, 24 points, Goal Difference: 25:16
7. Lovćen – 19 matches, 5 wins, 19 points, Goal Difference: 14:29
8. Igalo – 19 matches, 5 wins, 9 points, Goal Difference: 12:29
9. Podgorica – 19 matches, 4 wins, 6 points, Goal Difference: 11:27
10. Internacional – 19 matches, 1 win, 3 points, Goal Difference: 12:4
The outcome of this match sets the stage for an unpredictable second half of the season in the Second Football League. With teams vying for promotion and others fighting to avoid relegation, the competition will undoubtedly intensify. Otrant will need to regroup and address their defensive lapses if they hope to maintain their lead, while Iskra can draw confidence from this significant victory as they navigate the challenges ahead.
