King Charles Introduces Unique Christmas Gifts for Staff

King Charles III is making his mark with a distinctive approach to Christmas gifting for his staff, differing notably from traditions established by his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II. As the festive season approaches, the King, aged 77, is known for his generosity towards those who support him throughout the year.

During the Christmas period, the King gathers his family at the Sandringham estate for celebrations but ensures that his staff are not overlooked. According to a source familiar with royal customs, the King has changed the gift-giving tradition significantly. “He used to give a dinner service, matching plates, side plates and so on, but he would give bits of it at a time, so you would get the full collection if you stayed in service long enough,” the source stated.

This contrasts with Queen Elizabeth II’s more straightforward approach, where staff received a Christmas pudding annually. While King Charles has introduced a new style of gifting, he still honors the tradition of providing a Christmas pudding as an additional treat, acknowledging his staff’s hard work.

Celebrations at St James’ Palace

To get into the holiday spirit, staff from various royal residences, including the Highgrove estate, gather to celebrate at St James’ Palace. This gathering includes members from the Royal Household who come together to reflect on the year and enjoy the festivities.

Former royal gardener Jack Stooks, who worked at Highgrove, shared insights into the King’s personal touch during the holiday season. He noted that, “For the first few years that I worked at Highgrove, we also got a Christmas pudding from the King.” Additionally, Stooks recalled receiving hand-signed Christmas cards from both the King and Queen Camilla, further illustrating the King’s personal connection to his staff.

King Charles and Queen Camilla recently celebrated another Christmas at Sandringham, surrounded by family, including the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children. The King’s approach to gift-giving not only reflects his character but also the evolving traditions within the royal family, marking a shift toward a more personal and engaging connection with staff.

As the royal family continues to adapt to modern expectations, King Charles’s thoughtful gestures during the festive season aim to strengthen the bond between the monarchy and those who support it.
