Labour Faces Criticism for Cancelling Elections in 63 Councils

Keir Starmer and the Labour Party are facing significant backlash for their recent decision to allow 63 councils to postpone local elections scheduled for May 2026. Critics from the Conservative Party and Reform UK have accused Labour of evading accountability to voters, describing the move as a strategic maneuver to protect the party from potential electoral losses.

The decision affects over 10 million voters across the affected councils. Among the councils involved, approximately half are governed by Labour, raising concerns that this postponement could limit losses for the party and bolster Starmer’s leadership amidst mounting internal pressure. In some instances, these elections are being postponed for a second consecutive year, meaning certain councillors might not face voters for as long as seven years.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has been vocal in his criticism, likening Labour’s actions to those of a “dictator.” He stated, “Only a banana republic bans elections; that’s what we have under Starmer.” Fellow Reform MP Lee Anderson echoed this sentiment, labeling the Prime Minister as “frit” and implying that Labour’s approach undermines democratic processes.

The Conservative Party’s elections spokesman, Sir James Cleverly, accused Labour of “running scared of the voters.” He criticized the party for attempting to overhaul local governance in a way that favors their political interests. Earlier in December, Labour had already canceled mayoral elections, further fueling claims that they are manipulating the democratic process.

Local government officials also expressed concerns. Richard Wright, chairman of the District Councils Network, emphasized that the traditional four-year election cycle should only be disrupted in exceptional circumstances. He warned that such actions could erode public trust in local democracy.

The decision to postpone these elections comes despite warnings from the Electoral Commission against delaying elections for more than a year. Conservative justice spokesman Robert Jenrick highlighted that elections were not canceled even during the pandemic, suggesting that the current government’s actions reflect a deeper distrust in the electorate.

Defending the postponement, Alison McGovern, the local government minister, noted that many councils expressed concerns about managing elections concurrently with significant reorganizations within local government initiated by Labour the previous year. She stated, “Many councils across the country… have expressed concerns about the time and energy spent managing elections to bodies that won’t shortly exist.”

The political landscape is charged as Labour prepares for a potential leadership challenge if electoral outcomes do not meet expectations. Allies of Starmer are reportedly planning to schedule the King’s Speech shortly after the elections, possibly to deter rivals from challenging his leadership.

In response to the situation, Tory local government spokesman Paul Holmes criticized the government for its apparent fear of elections, questioning its commitment to democratic principles. He stated, “While many people gather around their screens to watch movies, we’re discussing how Labour is trying to steal the elections.”

The Liberal Democrat leader, Sir Ed Davey, also condemned the actions as a collaborative effort between Labour and the Conservatives to deny voters their rights in May.

As the political discourse evolves, the implications of this decision may extend beyond immediate electoral strategies, potentially affecting public perception of democracy in local governance across the country.
