Max Verstappen Raises Concerns Ahead of F1 Pre-Season Tests

Max Verstappen, the four-time Formula 1 world champion, has expressed uncertainty about the upcoming pre-season tests for Red Bull Racing. As teams prepare for a significant technical overhaul, Verstappen predicts a challenging start to the season. The first pre-season test will take place at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya starting on January 26, 2024, marking the earliest pre-season running since 2014.

This year introduces the largest set of technical regulations in the sport’s history, resulting in three pre-season tests instead of the one typically held in past seasons. As teams gear up for the season, all 11 teams are organizing launches for their cars and liveries around the initial testing events in Spain, followed by a second test in Bahrain.

Verstappen, who will pilot a Red Bull car featuring an in-house power unit for the first time, noted the team’s lack of familiarity with the new engine and car. Speaking to Blick, he remarked, “None of us have any idea about the new car or the engine. I think that during the first tests in Barcelona starting on January 26, we’ll be spending more time in the garages than out on the track.” He hopes that the subsequent tests in Bahrain will provide clearer insights into the car’s performance.

Concerns have surfaced regarding Red Bull’s competitiveness, particularly due to the team’s inexperience in engine development. Verstappen’s performance last season was impressive, culminating in a victory at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Despite this, he narrowly missed clinching the 2025 title, finishing just two points behind Lando Norris, after staging a remarkable comeback from being 104 points behind the leader earlier in the season.

The future of Verstappen with Red Bull has also been a topic of speculation. Reports indicate that he had discussions with Mercedes last season as he weighed his options amid Red Bull’s struggles in the first half of the campaign. Despite these uncertainties, Ford, which has a partnership with Red Bull, has reaffirmed its commitment to the team regardless of Verstappen’s status. A Ford representative stated, “Max is an important part of the team, but not to the point where we’re saying, ‘if he leaves the team, then we’re leaving too.’ We have faith in the team and know that other drivers will arrive in the future.”

With the start of the season approaching, all eyes will be on Red Bull as they navigate these changes and seek to establish their position in the highly competitive world of Formula 1. The pre-season tests in Barcelona and Bahrain will be crucial in determining the team’s readiness for the challenges ahead.
