Montenegrin Citizen Stabbed to Death in Rome Amid Tensions
A young Montenegrin man, Demir Orahovac, was fatally stabbed in Rome on November 18, 2023. The incident occurred in the entryway of an apartment building located on Via Ventimiglia in the Trullo district. Orahovac, 25, was taken to San Camillo Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
Orahovac, who had no criminal record, lived in the building with one of his six brothers. The investigation suggests that his murder may be linked to a cycle of revenge and violence in the area, particularly associated with illegal occupations of social housing. According to local media reports, the context surrounding the murder highlights ongoing tensions within the community, marked by small-scale vendettas and personal disputes.
The circumstances of his death have drawn attention to the broader issues affecting the neighborhood. C.Z. and A.Z., a father and son aged 48 and 25 respectively, along with a 37-year-old man identified as D.A., were arrested in connection with the incident. All three individuals are reported to be residents of the same block, which has been described as a focal point of local tensions.
Investigation Underway
The local Carabinieri are leading the investigation to uncover the motives behind Orahovac’s murder. Just two hours prior to the stabbing, police responded to reports of two cars being set on fire and an attempted arson of the building’s entrance. During this intervention, officers encountered Orahovac, who had sustained a head injury, possibly from a prior altercation.
Residents of the building have expressed concern over the escalating violence. They reported that the Orahovac brothers had illegally occupied their apartment since November 18 last year, entering through a window. Despite complaints to local authorities, the family reportedly refused to vacate the premises.
The atmosphere within the community has been described by local officials as critical. Marco Palma, the deputy mayor of the XI municipality, emphasized the need for urgent action to address the growing sense of insecurity. “This is a defeat for our social organization and for our community,” Palma stated. He called for an immediate meeting of the public security committee to address the underlying issues contributing to such violence.
Community Response
The tragic death of Demir Orahovac serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing residents in areas like Trullo. With illegal occupations and social conflicts on the rise, Palma underscored the necessity of proactive measures to restore safety and stability. “No one should feel excluded from society, or neighborhoods like Trullo are destined to never recover,” he added.
As the investigation continues, the community grapples with the implications of this violent act, hoping for a resolution that will help quell the tensions that have led to such a loss of life.
