Montenegro Faces Must-Win Match Against Faroe Islands
Montenegro’s national handball team is gearing up for a crucial match against the Faroe Islands at the European Championship in Oslo today at 18:00. This encounter is vital for Montenegro, who currently sits at the bottom of their group after a narrow defeat against Slovenia, where they lost 41:40 despite scoring a remarkable 40 goals.
The match on October 24, 2018, when Montenegro initially drew with the Faroe Islands 24-24, marked a significant turning point. That result shocked many in the European handball community. Since then, Montenegro has reached the 11th place at the EHF Euro 2022. In contrast, the Faroe Islands have evolved from being underdogs to a team that many now view as a serious contender.
With just one point from their first match against Switzerland, the Faroe Islands are looking to build on their recent performances. They managed a dramatic 28-28 draw against Switzerland, having led by six goals in the second half. Their standout player, Elias Elefsen, showcased impressive skill during this match.
Ahead of today’s game, Vuko Borozan, a key player for Montenegro, expressed the team’s resolve: “We want to forget the game against Slovenia and focus on the match with the Faroe Islands. This is a final for us.” The emotional impact of the previous match was evident as he admitted it was difficult to sleep after such a close defeat.
Montenegro’s coach, Miodrag Ćorsović, emphasized the need for psychological recovery. He noted that despite the loss, the group remains competitive. “We need to forget the match against Slovenia and remember what we have to do in the next two games,” he stated.
As both teams prepare for this critical showdown, the atmosphere in Oslo is expected to be electric, with a strong presence of Faroe Islands supporters. Approximately six thousand fans from the archipelago have traveled to the venue, creating a home-like environment for their team.
Teis Horn, a player from the Faroe Islands, acknowledged Montenegro’s strengths, stating, “They have very strong players, so we need to play fast and look for counter-attack opportunities.” He recognizes the unpredictability of matches against teams like Montenegro, where individual performances can significantly influence the outcome.
The stakes are high for Montenegro; they cannot afford another setback if they hope to advance in the tournament. A loss today would complicate their path to the main round, making the call for a full team effort even more pressing.
In summary, today’s match against the Faroe Islands is not just another game for Montenegro; it is a defining moment in their European Championship journey. With everything on the line, the “Lions” must rise to the occasion and secure a vital victory to stay in contention for advancement.
