Moray Man Sentenced for Threatening Neighbours with Violence

A man from Elgin has received a sentence requiring him to undertake unpaid community work after threatening his neighbours. During a hearing at the Elgin Sheriff Court, it was revealed that on October 11, 2022, Thomas Crawford confronted a neighbour at his door, issuing a violent threat: “Get a hold of your woman. If she calls the police again I will kick her head in.”

The situation escalated further on December 30, 2022, when Crawford shouted threats at the same neighbours following a disturbance involving their pets. Court proceedings disclosed that Crawford yelled, “Stop banging. I will kill you rats. I will always know where you live.” This alarming behaviour prompted legal action against him.

Crawford, aged 49, admitted to acting in a manner that would cause alarm to a reasonable person. He also pleaded guilty to violating a court-imposed curfew. His defence solicitor, Megan Lee, acknowledged Crawford’s “extensive record” but noted his willingness to address his alcohol-related issues. During a social worker interview, Crawford was described as “extremely candid” about his struggles.

Since the incidents, Crawford has engaged with Arrows, a support service based in Moray that focuses on drug and alcohol rehabilitation. The court was informed that the neighbours have since moved from Shaw Place, seeking respite from the ongoing disturbances.

In her ruling, Sheriff Olga Pasportnikov mandated that Crawford continue attending Arrows appointments for the next nine months. Additionally, he was ordered to complete 180 hours of unpaid community service within the same timeframe. This sentence aims to address both the community’s safety and Crawford’s personal rehabilitation.
