Nationwide Protests Erupt Following Death of Activist Renee Good
The death of activist Renee Good during an encounter with a federal immigration officer has sparked widespread protests across the United States. Demonstrations erupted in major cities, including Austin, Texas, and Los Angeles, California, as anger over the fatal incident prompted thousands to take to the streets.
Protests began after Good, a 37-year-old mother, was shot during a confrontation with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minneapolis on January 6, 2026. Activists organized under the banner “ICE Out for Good,” calling for an end to federal immigration enforcement and justice for Good. The protests quickly spread nationwide, resulting in confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement.
Protests Intensify in Austin and Los Angeles
In Austin, police arrested at least three individuals on January 9 as tensions escalated near the intersection of South Congress and East Sixth Street. Demonstrators had gathered outside the J.J. Pickle Federal Building before marching through downtown. Videos from the scene captured police pushing into the crowd while protesters shouted support for those detained.
Texas officials, including Governor Greg Abbott, emphasized a strict approach to managing the protests. Abbott stated that the Texas Department of Public Safety would not tolerate “defiant protesters.” In a statement, Lt. Chris Olivarez of the DPS reiterated that while peaceful assembly is a protected right, any violence or obstruction of roadways would face consequences.
Similar tensions unfolded in Los Angeles, where hundreds of demonstrators gathered in downtown on the evening of January 9. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) issued dispersal orders as crowds began to block traffic outside federal facilities. Officers in riot gear formed lines to control the situation, resulting in several arrests.
Nationwide Response and Calls for Justice
The protests have not been confined to Austin and Los Angeles. Demonstrations have also been reported in cities such as New York, Portland, Boston, and Philadelphia, with organizers stating that over 1,000 events were planned under the “ICE Out for Good” slogan. The protests reflect a growing frustration with federal immigration policies and their impact on local communities.
In Minneapolis, where Good was killed, crowds marched from Powderhorn Park to Lake Street, chanting her name in immigrant neighborhoods. Mayor Jacob Frey noted that while many protests remained peaceful, there were instances of vandalism, leading to multiple arrests. Frey stressed the importance of maintaining order and not devolving into chaos.
The narrative surrounding Good’s death has been contentious. Federal officials maintain that the ICE agent acted in self-defense, claiming Good had “weaponized” her vehicle. This account has faced significant pushback from local officials and protesters, who have labeled the shooting a murder.
As protests continue, activists are calling for policy changes and accountability. Austin resident Joanna Ford, an eighth-grade teacher, expressed concern for her students, some of whom have fled violence in their home countries. “What are we doing, you know? It’s just really disheartening,” she remarked, emphasizing the potential for Good’s death to serve as a catalyst for change.
Demonstrators remain resolute in their demands for justice and reform, as the protests evolve into a significant movement against federal immigration enforcement in the United States. The situation is fluid, with authorities preparing for further unrest in the coming days.
