New Report Links Metal Fragments to Azerbaijan Airlines Crash
Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Transport has announced that metal fragments critically damaged the Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243, leading to its crash near Aktau on December 25, 2024. The interim report reveals that the Embraer E190 lost full control, resulting in the tragic deaths of 38 out of 67 individuals on board. While the report does not directly implicate any nation, there is a prevailing assumption that Russian military forces accidentally struck the aircraft while targeting Ukrainian drones in the area.
The interim findings detail that the damage to the E190 was consistent with impacts from metal fragments made from iron-based alloys, such as steel. The flight originated in Baku and was en route to Grozny, Russia, when it was forced to divert to Aktau due to severe weather conditions. Passengers reported hearing a loud explosion, which is believed to have been caused by a Russian missile detonating nearby. Following this incident, the aircraft suffered significant hydraulic failures, impairing the pilots’ ability to control the plane during an emergency landing attempt.
Damage Assessment and Investigation Progress
The report from Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Transport emphasized that no explosive residues were found on the aircraft. It stated, “A traceological examination of a part of the pipe of the hydraulic system No. 2 revealed that the pipe was damaged due to metal tearing from contact with foreign objects made of iron-based metal alloys.”
As part of the ongoing investigation, experts have completed their analysis of the E190’s black boxes, including the flight data recorder (FDR) and cockpit voice recorder (CVR). The FDR provides essential data on the aircraft’s performance, while the CVR captures the actions and decisions made by the flight crew. Investigators attempted to recover data from the Honeywell Central Maintenance Computer, but severe thermal damage has hindered these efforts. Collaborations with Honeywell and US authorities are ongoing to explore alternative recovery methods.
Two specialized working groups are engaged in the investigation: one focuses on reconstructing the hydraulic failure, while the other assesses the risks associated with flying through conflict zones. The Ministry of Transport has noted that this interim report is just a step in a lengthy investigation process, with the timeline for the full report contingent on further analyses.
Context of Aviation Safety in Conflict Zones
The crash of Flight 8243 underscores the dangers of operating commercial aviation in or around active conflict zones. Historical incidents, such as the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 in July 2014, which resulted in 298 fatalities, highlight the risks involved. Flight MH17 was shot down by pro-Russian separatists while flying over Ukraine. Similarly, the January 2020 downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752, caused by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps mistakenly identifying it as a threat, adds to the growing list of tragedies linked to military actions in civilian airspace.
The recent uptick in US military activity around Venezuela has raised concerns about potential risks to commercial aircraft. Incidents involving military aircraft operating with transponders off have already resulted in near-misses with civilian planes, further emphasizing the ongoing need for vigilance and safety protocols in conflict-affected regions.
As the investigation into the crash of Flight 8243 continues, it serves as a critical reminder of the complexities and dangers that commercial aviation faces in areas marked by military conflict.
