Newcastle Falls to Marseille After Late Collapse in Champions League
Newcastle United suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Marseille in the Champions League, largely due to a brief period of chaos at the start of the second half. The Magpies initially led the match at the Stade Velodrome, with Harvey Barnes scoring in the sixth minute, but a rush of errors allowed Marseille to seize control.
The pivotal moment came when goalkeeper Nick Pope made a critical mistake just after the break. His misjudgment allowed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to equalize for Marseille mere seconds into the second half. The 36-year-old forward then secured the win with a second goal, leaving Newcastle’s players and coaching staff frustrated.
In a post-match interview with TNT Sports, defender Dan Burn expressed his disappointment, stating, “It’s definitely frustrating. I thought we stuck to the game plan pretty well for the whole game, just 10 or 15 minutes of madness at the start of the second half has cost us.” Burn emphasized the importance of maintaining focus, especially in challenging away matches.
Newcastle’s head coach, Eddie Howe, echoed Burn’s sentiments regarding the loss of concentration. He remarked, “The start of the second half obviously was a big one for us, and 15 minutes at the start of the second half, I thought, cost us.” He noted that while the team handled the atmosphere well in the first half, the quick goal from Aubameyang shifted the momentum, ultimately leading to difficulties in regaining control of the match.
Despite the setback, Burn highlighted that Newcastle had opportunities to extend their lead but failed to capitalize. “We had chances that we should have scored and didn’t manage to put them away,” he said. The team’s inability to convert chances into goals proved costly against a seasoned opponent.
Aubameyang, who celebrated his 400th career goal earlier in the weekend, expressed his joy in securing two goals on this important night for Marseille. He remarked on his enduring performance, stating, “Hopefully a lot. I’m feeling great even if I’m 36. I’m enjoying it, and when you live these types of games, of course, you want to play more and score more.”
This victory was crucial for Marseille as they aim to strengthen their qualification hopes in the Champions League. Aubameyang emphasized the need for wins to advance, saying, “If we want to go through, obviously we need to win games, so yes, it was very important.”
As Newcastle reflects on the match, they will need to regroup quickly as they look to secure their position in the tournament. The defeat marks a setback for a team that had hoped to build on their recent successes, including a notable win against Manchester City just a week earlier. The Magpies will aim to learn from this experience as they prepare for their next challenge in the competition.
