Niksic Celebrates Cultural Legacy with Folklore Milestone

Niksic secured its title as the “European Capital of Culture 2030,” a milestone that underscores its vibrant cultural history. While the city has not always enjoyed a flourishing cultural scene in recent years, its rich heritage, particularly through the cultural and artistic society known as Zahumlje, has played a crucial role in its recognition. Established 128 years ago, Zahumlje is one of the oldest cultural associations in the Balkans, fostering generations of artistic talent in Niksic.

The Vuletic family exemplifies the profound impact of Zahumlje on local culture. Dragan, Danka, Nikola, and Milica Vuletic have all been involved in the folklore ensemble, which marked its 50th anniversary recently. Dragan Vuletic, a founding member, reflects on the significance of their contributions. “If you ask me for the shortest answer about what Zahumlje means to me, I would say – everything!” he stated, recalling how he met Danka there and how their children followed in their footsteps.

Founded in 1975, Zahumlje began as a singing society but quickly evolved to include various artistic expressions. Dragan recalls the early days, filled with enthusiasm and dedication. “It’s hard to remember all the faces from those beginnings, but many of the first performers are no longer with us,” he noted, reminiscing about their first public performances.

Danka Vuletic joined Zahumlje in 1982, and her bond with Dragan blossomed through their shared love for folklore. Their children, Nikola and Milica, also became active participants. While Milica performed for two decades, Nikola pursued a career in sports, ultimately representing Montenegro in rugby. “Three generations are linked by this dance,” Danka said proudly, highlighting the family’s enduring connection to folklore.

Dragan’s active performance continued until 2006. He fondly recalls numerous tours, including a memorable trip to Russia in 1985, where he organized a two-week tour for Zahumlje. With performances across Europe, including Poland and Italy, the ensemble brought Montenegrin heritage to diverse audiences.

Today, Dragan visits Zahumlje mainly to reconnect with old friends, as he reflects on the institution’s role in shaping his life. He expressed disappointment when the organization celebrated its 50th anniversary without acknowledging the Vuletic family’s contributions. “My ties to Zahumlje span half a century, which is quite significant,” he remarked.

Zahumlje has served as a cultural hub in Niksic, fostering not only artistic expression but also community spirit. Many local families, including the Nikolic and Lasica families, have their roots entwined with the organization. Dragan emphasizes that Zahumlje was more than an ensemble; it was a family. “It functioned as a home, a place where mutual respect and love flourished,” he explained.

As Niksic prepares for its future as a cultural capital, the legacy of Zahumlje and families like the Vuletic family remains a vital part of its identity. The stories of their artistic journey, filled with joy and dedication, underscore the importance of community in preserving cultural heritage. With the Vuletic family celebrating their unique connection to Zahumlje, Niksic’s cultural heartbeat continues to thrive, promising to engage future generations in the rich tapestry of folklore and tradition.
