Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk has identified his “last dance” in the ring, naming the fight he most desires following his upcoming match against Dutch kickboxing icon Rico Verhoeven. This bout is scheduled for May 23, 2024, at the iconic Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, where Usyk will defend his WBC world title. This event marks Usyk’s return to the ring since his victory over Daniel Dubois last July, when he became a three-time, two-division undisputed champion.

While Usyk has a history of competing against formidable opponents, his next match presents a unique challenge. Verhoeven has limited experience in boxing, having only participated in one professional boxing fight, which he won against Janos Finfera, who held a 0-5 record, back in 2014. In contrast, Usyk has solidified his status as one of the greatest heavyweights of his era, boasting victories over notable fighters such as Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, and Dubois.

Usyk’s Future Plans

At 39 years of age, Usyk has announced that he plans to have only three more fights, which includes the match against Verhoeven. In an interview with Inside the Ring, he expressed interest in facing the winner of Fabio Wardley’s WBO world title defence against Dubois, set for May 9, 2024. Following that potential bout, Usyk’s ultimate goal is a trilogy showdown with Fury, which he has revealed would serve as his ideal farewell to a remarkable career.

Usyk previously faced Fury twice in 2024, winning both encounters. Their first match ended in a split decision after Fury was knocked down in the ninth round, sparking intense discussions about a possible third fight.

As he prepares for his match against Verhoeven, Usyk’s focus remains on solidifying his legacy in boxing. The upcoming fight represents not only a title defence but also a critical stepping stone towards concluding his impressive journey in the sport.

With his sights set on the future, Usyk’s strategic planning and dedication to the sport continue to resonate with fans and analysts alike, as he navigates the final chapters of his career.
