Rasmus Hojlund Thrives at Napoli After Manchester United Struggles
Denmark manager Brian Riemer has expressed confidence in Rasmus Hojlund‘s resurgence at Napoli, following a challenging tenure at Manchester United. Hojlund, 22, has made a remarkable impact since joining Napoli on loan, scoring four goals in his first six matches and contributing to the team’s position at the top of Serie A.
After two difficult seasons at Manchester United, where he netted 26 goals in 95 appearances, Hojlund struggled to find his form in the Premier League. Last season was particularly frustrating, as he managed only four goals in 32 league matches, prompting his loan move back to Italy. He originally joined Manchester United from Atalanta in 2023.
Riemer points to the supportive environment at Napoli as a key factor in Hojlund’s current success. He noted that Hojlund is now part of a “well-functioning team” that allows him to showcase his talents effectively. Riemer stated, “The fact that he is now on a well-functioning team and has players around him who take pride in doing good for others helps to make the outcome for a striker like Rasmus, who needs to be serviced.”
Hojlund’s Return to Form
Hojlund himself acknowledges the importance of being with a successful team. He emphasized that his improvement is largely due to being part of a good football environment. “Not much has happened other than me getting into a good football team,” he explained. “I’ve played a lot and it’s been going really well. I’ve felt fit and sharp.”
The young striker is optimistic about his role, stating, “In my position, I’m basically there to score goals. That’s my job.” His renewed confidence has been evident on the pitch, as he has been instrumental in Napoli’s strong start to the season.
Riemer believes Hojlund possesses the potential to excel in both Italian and English football. He remarked, “I think Rasmus has the quality for both leagues, without discussion.” This perspective highlights Hojlund’s versatility and adaptability as a player.
Upcoming Challenges for Denmark
As Hojlund continues to shine in Italy, he will also be looking to translate that success into international play. Denmark is preparing for two crucial World Cup qualifiers this week, facing Belarus on Thursday and hosting Greece on Sunday in a competitive group that includes Scotland.
Napoli’s head coach, Antonio Conte, has also praised Hojlund’s development, stating, “He has significant room for improvement, he needs to work because he has the potential to become a star, and he’s proving it.” This endorsement from a respected coach underscores the expectations surrounding Hojlund’s future in football.
With the right support and environment, Riemer and Conte both believe that Hojlund can achieve great success. As he continues to find his footing in Italy, fans will be eager to see how he performs in the upcoming international fixtures.
