Emergency services successfully rescued an individual from cliffs in South Shields, South Tyneside, during a challenging operation on March 16, 2024. The incident, which occurred at Frenchman’s Bay, prompted a swift response from multiple agencies due to the difficult weather conditions.

At approximately 03:16 AM, the South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB) received a call for assistance, leading to the mobilization of the Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team, Northumbria Police, and the North East Ambulance Service, alongside a Coastguard rescue helicopter. The SSVLB described the situation as “challenging” due to strong winds and low temperatures that complicated the rescue efforts.

In their statement, the SSVLB noted the importance of helicopter support. “Due to the casualty’s location, we requested rescue 199 to attend. A very cold night with strong winds made the incident very challenging,” the statement read. The helicopter’s winchmen played a crucial role in safely lifting the individual from the cliffside and placing them next to an awaiting ambulance.

The North East Ambulance Service was notified of the situation shortly before 03:30 AM. A spokesperson confirmed that a paramedic ambulance, two Hazardous Area Response Team crews, a clinical team leader, and a duty officer were dispatched to the scene. They stated, “The coastguard was able to safely bring the patient for assessment by our crews and transport to hospital.”

Once on site, emergency responders conducted a thorough assessment before transporting the individual to a local hospital for further care. The teamwork displayed by the various agencies involved highlights the importance of coordinated efforts during emergencies, especially under adverse weather conditions.

This incident underscores the vital role of emergency services in ensuring public safety, particularly in challenging environments where timely interventions can make a significant difference.
