Royal Family’s Christmas at Sandringham Features Unique Sleeping Arrangements
The Royal Family celebrated Christmas this year at Sandringham, where various members gathered on December 25, 2023. The event included King Charles and Queen Camilla, along with Prince William, Princess Catherine, and their three children. Other attendees were Prince Edward and his family, Mike and Zara Tindall, and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. While Sandringham House served as the venue for the festivities, not all royals stayed overnight, with some opting for nearby accommodations or returning to their own homes.
Despite the grandeur associated with royal events, reports reveal that the sleeping arrangements at Sandringham may not be as luxurious as anticipated. According to royal expert Rebecca English, the house accommodates only about 16 to 18 guests, leading to some unexpected arrangements. It has been suggested that certain royal guests may have to share rooms in what has been referred to as “fish finger” style beds.

English, who serves as the Royal Editor for The Daily Mail, noted that in past years, some family members have found themselves staying in staff quarters, which have been converted into guest bedrooms. She stated, “In previous years, I’ve been told that they’ve actually had to kick staff out of their quarters. And Edward and Sophie were put in some of the staff quarters because they had nowhere else to stay.” This highlights a more practical side of royal life, contrasting the expected glamour.
While the Prince and Princess of Wales traditionally spend Christmas Day at Sandringham with their children, they usually return to their nearby home, Anmer Hall, for the night. Other guests often stay in various properties across the Sandringham Estate, with a portion residing in the main house.
King Charles is anticipated to remain at Sandringham for a few more days to enjoy the peaceful holiday atmosphere before royal engagements resume in the New Year. The unique dynamics and arrangements of the royal Christmas celebration provide a glimpse into the less formal aspects of royal life, emphasizing that even the monarchy has its own quirks and challenges.
