Ruben Amorim Eyes Benfica Role After Manchester United Exit
Ruben Amorim is poised for a swift return to management following his dismissal as manager of Manchester United. The 40-year-old was let go after a disappointing 14-month tenure at Old Trafford, where he secured only 24 wins out of 63 matches, marking the lowest win percentage of any permanent manager since the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson.
Amorim’s exit on Monday morning was not solely due to poor results. Tensions with the club’s hierarchy reportedly escalated in the days leading to his departure, complicating his relationship with the management. Despite these challenges, Amorim’s reputation as a talented coach remains intact, particularly after his successful stint at Sporting Lisbon, where he gained considerable recognition.
Benfica Links and Future Prospects
Potential opportunities for Amorim are already emerging. According to reports from the Daily Mail, he has been linked with a return to Benfica, a club where he enjoyed a successful playing career. Amorim previously dismissed speculation about this move in September when presidential candidate Joao Noronha Lopes expressed interest in bringing him back to the club. Lopes, who ultimately lost the election to Rui Costa, had attended a match at Old Trafford, making his intentions clear.
Following Lopes’s election loss, Costa appointed Jose Mourinho as Benfica’s new manager after dismissing Bruno Lage. However, Mourinho’s position appears increasingly precarious, with Benfica currently trailing 10 points behind league leaders Porto. As a result, Amorim could find himself in a favorable position to take over at Benfica if Mourinho is let go.
Amorim’s background as a former midfielder, during which he earned 14 caps for Portugal and won three league titles with Benfica, adds to his credentials. His expertise in navigating the pressures of top-flight football could make him an attractive candidate for the role.
Manchester United’s Management Situation
As for Manchester United, there have been discussions regarding the return of former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær, who is reportedly in talks to take on a caretaker role following Amorim’s departure. Solskjær previously led the team for three years but did not secure any major trophies during his tenure. This raises questions about whether bringing him back would be a step forward for the club or a regression.
The situation at Manchester United remains fluid as the club seeks to stabilize its performance in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Amorim’s next career move will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike, especially if he secures a position at Benfica, a club that holds significant personal and professional meaning for him.
The coming weeks are likely to reveal more about the future paths of both Amorim and Manchester United as they navigate a pivotal moment in their respective histories.
