Surge in Anti-Muslim Posts on X Following US-Israel Conflict
A significant increase in anti-Muslim posts has emerged on Elon Musk’s X platform since the US and Israel initiated military actions against Iran on February 28, 2023. A study conducted by the Washington, DC-based Center for the Study of Organized Hate (CSOH) revealed that the volume of posts explicitly dehumanizing and inciting violence against Muslims surged dramatically during this period.
The CSOH tracked posts from January 1 to March 5, 2023, focusing on content originating in the United States that targeted American Muslims. The analysis indicated that on the day the conflict began, the number of such posts jumped from just under 2,000 per day to over 6,000. The report emphasized the concerning reach of this content, noting that reposts significantly amplify harmful messages, allowing them to spread beyond their original sources. With reposts included, the overall volume of Islamophobic content rose to 279,417, representing an astonishing eleven-fold increase.
By March 5, the report noted a decline in anti-Muslim posts, but CSOH cautioned that the underlying conditions fueling this surge remained unaddressed. The content analyzed ranged from personal opinions fueled by hate to calls for lawmakers to implement strict anti-Muslim policies, including proposals for a “Muslim Exclusion Act” and the deportation of all Muslims.
The study pointed to a troubling trend among some political figures, including hardline Republicans like Congressman Randy Fine and Senator Tommy Tuberville, as well as conservative commentators such as Laura Loomer, who have advocated for measures targeting, isolating, and removing Muslims from the United States. CSOH identified a “significant indicator of escalation risk” in the language used in these posts, with references to Muslims as “rats,” “pests,” “vermin,” and “parasites.” Such terminology has historically been linked to extreme acts of violence against marginalized communities.
The report also highlighted posts that depicted Muslims as an “infestation,” framing them as a contagious threat to American cities and institutions. This narrative further fueled calls for violence, cloaking genocidal rhetoric in notions of “self-defense” and “civilizational survival.”
As part of its investigation, CSOH reported 30 posts to X support under the categories of “Violent Speech” and “Hate, Abuse or Harassment.” Of these, only 11 were removed, leaving 19 still visible on the platform as of March 9. CSOH noted a significant enforcement gap on X, attributing it to a critical disconnect between the platform’s policies and their application, particularly affecting Muslim communities.
In response to the alarming volume of anti-Muslim posts, the report called on social media platforms to establish “Trusted Flagger status” for Muslim civil rights organizations, along with dedicated channels for reporting mass incitement and threats. The organization urged civil society groups, law enforcement agencies, and community leaders to enhance their monitoring efforts, thereby fostering better engagement with political leaders to address online narratives that could incite violence against Muslims.
CSOH also pressed elected officials to reflect on their rhetoric, cautioning that language linking military confrontations with religious or civilizational struggles, particularly those rooted in Christian nationalist narratives, risks inflaming domestic hostility toward minority groups. This warning comes despite the reluctance of many lawmakers to reconsider their stances, particularly in light of the Trump administration and a Republican-controlled Congress showing little interest in defending Muslim communities or religious freedoms beyond the Judeo-Christian sphere.
