Tensions Rise as Montenegro Navy Commander Dismissed Amid Dispute

The Military Police of Montenegro has removed Darko Vuković from his position as the Commander of the Navy. This decision follows a complaint he submitted to Jakov Milatović, the President of Montenegro, concerning the actions of Dragan Krapović, the Minister of Defense.

According to reports from the Podgorica-based news outlet Cdm, military police sealed Vuković’s office this morning and barred him from entering military facilities. Vuković’s correspondence with the President detailed grievances about Krapović, whom he accused of preventing him from using the main entrance to the Ministry of Defense and belittling him during meetings.

In response to the escalating situation, President Milatović has called for a meeting of the Council for Defense and Security, scheduled for tomorrow at 11:00 at Villa Gorica. The gathering will focus on a report regarding the state of the military for 2024, as well as the participation of Montenegro’s military personnel in international exercises and training during the upcoming year.

During the session, council members will also review a proposal regarding the involvement of Montenegrin military units in international exercises and training sessions planned for 2026. Additional topics will include recommendations from the Ministry of Defense about the appointments, dismissals, and promotions of both male and female officers in the military, alongside other relevant issues within its jurisdiction.

The dismissal of Vuković highlights ongoing tensions within Montenegro’s military leadership, raising concerns about internal cohesion and the effectiveness of defense strategies in the region.
