Tributes Flow for Jo Austin, Beloved Veterinary Practice Manager
Tributes have poured in for Jo Austin, a dedicated veterinary practice manager who passed away on February 20, 2024, at West Suffolk Hospital after a brief illness. She was 61 years old and had been a cherished member of the Eastgate Vets team for 45 years, primarily serving at the practice’s Bury St Edmunds branch while also providing vital support to locations in Mildenhall and Thetford.
A Lifelong Commitment to Animal Care
Jo’s journey in veterinary care began at the young age of 16 when she started as a ‘girl Friday’ at Eastgate Vets. Initially handling various roles, including animal care and reception duties, Jo quickly climbed the ranks to become head receptionist. More than 30 years ago, she took on the role of practice manager, where she became known for her empathy and dedication to both clients and colleagues.
Colleagues and clients alike have described Jo as having a “heart of gold.” Claire Crane, co-practice manager at Eastgate Vets and Jo’s colleague for 42 years, emphasized her remarkable ability to connect with pet owners and her unwavering support for team members. “Jo was an amazing colleague with a heart of gold,” Claire stated. “She had such empathy and always made time for people, lifting spirits when needed.”
Remembering Jo’s Legacy and Impact
Outside of her professional commitments, Jo had a profound love for gardening, often sharing her passion with her colleagues by gifting them plants. Her affection for animals, particularly cats, was evident in her decision to adopt many strays that came through the practice, providing them with loving homes.
Jo was married to her husband, Jim Austin, for 35 years and was the proud mother of two daughters, Becky and Kirsty. Claire expressed deep condolences for the family during this challenging time, stating, “Our thoughts are with Jim, Becky, and Kirsty at this difficult time.”
Katie Robinson, a regional Business Development Director from VetPartners, the larger veterinary group of which Eastgate Vets is a part, also shared her sorrow. “We are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and colleague Jo,” she noted. “Jo put the needs of every team member above her own, helping countless vets and nurses achieve their dreams in a challenging profession.”
The community has been touched by Jo’s passing, with numerous messages of condolence received at Eastgate Vets. Her funeral is scheduled for midday on March 20, 2024, at St Edmund’s Chapel, West Suffolk Crematorium in Risby. In her memory, donations can be made to Bury’s Stray Cat Fund, reflecting her lifelong commitment to animal welfare.
Jo Austin’s legacy as a compassionate leader and friend will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege to know her. Her dedication to the veterinary profession and her caring spirit will leave a lasting impact on the community she served.
