A435 Road Closures in Gloucestershire as Cycleway Work Progresses

Three nights of road closures will occur on the A435 Evesham Road in Gloucestershire as part of the ongoing £48 million cycleway project. Starting tonight, October 27, 2023, the road will be closed from 20:00 to 06:00 until Wednesday, October 30, 2023. The affected stretch runs from the Hyde Lane/Southam Lane junction to the Cheltenham Racecourse Roundabout in the southbound direction. This closure is necessary for essential resurfacing work.

According to a spokesperson from Gloucestershire Highways, the roadwork is a preparatory step for the reopening of the northbound lane scheduled for November 1, 2023. The northbound carriageway has been closed since September 22, and both routes are expected to reopen by 06:00 on Saturday, November 1.

During the cycleway project, further closures are planned. From 20:00 on November 7 until 06:00 on November 10, the Hyde Lane/Southam Lane junction will be completely closed in all directions for additional work. Access to the Webbs Garden Centre and nearby properties will remain available via the Cheltenham Racecourse Roundabout.

Following these closures, Gloucestershire Highways indicated that there may be contingency closures from November 10 to November 13, 2023. These would be overnight from 20:00 to 06:00, if necessary.

The A435 Cheltenham to Bishop’s Cleeve Cycleway scheme is being implemented in phases. Work commenced last year and is set to be completed by the end of January 2026, when the new cycleway will officially open. Gloucestershire County Council has emphasized that this project will significantly enhance cycling and walking infrastructure in the area.

As the construction progresses, local residents and commuters are advised to plan their routes accordingly to avoid delays and disruptions.
