Aston Villa’s Unai Emery Backs Jadon Sancho Amid Struggles
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has expressed his commitment to supporting Jadon Sancho as the player navigates a challenging loan period from Manchester United. Sancho, who was part of United’s so-called ‘Bomb Squad’ and sought to leave Old Trafford during the summer transfer window, joined Villa on a season-long loan on deadline day. Despite Villa’s impressive form this season, sitting just three points behind league leaders Arsenal, Sancho has struggled to make an impact.
In his 13 appearances for Villa, the 25-year-old has yet to start a Premier League match and has not recorded a goal or assist. This Sunday, as Villa prepares to host United, Sancho will be ineligible to play against his parent club.
Emery shared his perspective on Sancho’s situation during a press conference ahead of the match. He emphasized the importance of patience and support, stating, “Jadon is still being young. He has had an amazing career and is now in a moment where he needs help to recover his best performance.” The manager is optimistic about Sancho’s potential, believing that he can turn around his form in the second half of the season.
Focus on Improvement and Opportunities
Emery acknowledged that Sancho has not received as much playing time as he would like, but he expressed confidence that the player is determined to improve. “He is really being demanding of himself to try to get his best moment this season with us,” Emery said. He added that Sancho’s first match back will be against Chelsea on January 7, 2024, marking a fresh opportunity for the winger to showcase his talents.
As for the upcoming fixture against United, Emery downplayed the historical success that United has had against Villa, asserting that his focus is on the present. “I like usually to share with the players the numbers we have,” he noted. “We must be motivated how we are now and how we are setting our objectives.”
Villa currently sits in third place in the Premier League, a remarkable turnaround considering they began the season at the bottom of the table. Emery highlighted the team’s ambition to compete consistently in Europe and pursue trophies across various competitions.
Setting Goals for Success
With the match against United approaching, Emery emphasized the need for motivation and a desire to secure three points. “We connect with our supporters at Villa Park fantastically, and the connection is the best quality we can have,” he stated. The manager believes that maintaining high demands and objectives will be crucial for the team’s continued success.
As Villa prepares for this pivotal clash, the focus remains on harnessing the energy of the squad and the support of the fans to achieve their goals. Sancho’s journey at Villa may be challenging, but with Emery’s backing, there is hope for a turnaround as the season progresses.
