Authorities Advise Residents to Stay Indoors After Power Outage
A significant power outage in San Francisco on December 16, 2023, left over 130,000 residents and businesses without electricity. Authorities have advised the public to stay indoors as the outage has caused major disruptions to traffic and public safety across the city.
The blackout began in the city’s northwestern neighborhoods, including Richmond and Presidio, and quickly spread southward, affecting areas around Golden Gate Park. This widespread power failure resulted in approximately one-third of the city being plunged into darkness, with reports indicating darkened streets and unlit Christmas decorations across the affected areas.
Local social media platforms featured numerous posts showing the extent of the outage, highlighting the impact on local businesses. Many restaurants and shops closed their doors, and streetlights remained off, contributing to safety concerns. The San Francisco Department of Emergency Management reported “significant transit disruptions” throughout the city, urging residents to avoid nonessential travel. They advised that traffic signals should be treated as four-way stops due to the power outage.
The power failure was initially attributed to a fire that occurred at a PG&E substation located at 8th and Mission streets. Fire officials confirmed the incident via social media at approximately 15:15 local time. As the situation unfolded, PG&E announced around 16:00 that they had stabilized the power grid but could not confirm when power would be restored to all customers.
Transportation agencies adjusted their services in response to the outage, bypassing certain bus and train stations to ensure safety. PG&E did not immediately respond to inquiries from the Associated Press regarding the cause of the widespread blackouts or the timeline for restoration.
As this situation develops, city officials continue to monitor the aftermath of the outage, prioritizing public safety and efficient recovery efforts. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and to follow safety guidelines while navigating the ongoing challenges posed by the outage.
