British Airways Faces Backlash Over Exit-Row Seat Policy
A complaint against British Airways highlights concerns over age discrimination in seating policies. Lynne Norman, a frequent traveler, booked flights to Venice for December 2023 and reserved emergency exit row seats for herself and her husband. Both in their sixties and in good health, they have previously occupied these seats without issue.
However, a recent check of their booking revealed they had been reassigned to different seats. Upon contacting British Airways for clarification, Norman was informed that they “didn’t meet the criteria” for the exit row. After pressing for details, she learned their ages were cited as the disqualifying factor.
Norman noted that British Airways’ own policy, along with guidelines from the Civil Aviation Authority, does not impose any upper age limit for exit row seating. The requirements specify that passengers must be over 12, able-bodied, not pregnant, and capable of operating the exit in an emergency situation. Norman had confirmed her eligibility at the time of booking.
Despite her attempts to escalate the matter, including a call to a supervisor, Norman was cut off mid-conversation. Subsequent written complaints yielded little response, with British Airways closing her case after providing a copy of the policy that supports her claims.
In frustration, Norman ultimately decided to cancel her flights, incurring a charge of £70. This incident raises serious questions about potential age discrimination under the guise of safety protocols. As Norman points out, if safety is genuinely the concern, British Airways should clearly communicate its seating policies or refrain from offering seats that it does not permit certain passengers to occupy.
The situation has sparked discussions among travelers regarding the need for transparency and fairness in airline policies. As more individuals share their experiences, airlines may need to reevaluate their practices to ensure they adhere to both legal standards and customer expectations.
