Cecilia Giménez, Creator of ‘Monkey Jesus,’ Passes Away at 94
Cecilia Giménez, the Spanish artist known for her controversial restoration of a historic fresco, has died at the age of 94. Her attempt to restore the 19th-century painting, titled *Ecce Homo* (“Behold the Man”), at a church in Borja, Spain, gained international attention in August 2012 after it was dubbed “Monkey Jesus” due to its unexpected and humorous outcome.
Giménez’s effort to rejuvenate the fresco, which had suffered from deterioration, drew both laughter and criticism. The original painting, created by artist Elias Garcia Martinez, had been a treasured part of the Sanctuary of Mercy Church for over a century. Following her restoration, which many deemed a failure, the fresco took on a decidedly different appearance that struck a chord with internet users worldwide.
In announcing her passing, Borja’s mayor, Eduardo Arilla, reflected on Giménez’s passion for painting and her significance in the community. “She was a great lover of painting from a young age,” he stated. The mayor emphasized that while she became known globally through the “nice anecdote” of her restoration, those close to her recognized her as a remarkable individual.
Giménez’s restoration attempt was carried out without the knowledge of a donation from the original painter’s granddaughter, intended for professional restoration efforts. Despite her good intentions, cultural experts ruled that the fresco could never be restored to its former state. Although the artwork lacks substantial financial value, it holds considerable sentimental importance for the local community.
The botched restoration transformed into an unexpected boon for Borja. After going viral, the “Monkey Jesus” fresco attracted a surge of tourism, with visitor numbers reportedly increasing eight-fold in the year following the incident. In 2013, the influx of tourists helped raise €50,000 for local charities. Giménez capitalized on her newfound fame by hosting an art exhibition that featured 28 of her original pieces, showcasing her artistic talents beyond the infamous restoration.
Each year, the “Monkey Jesus” fresco continues to draw attention, with approximately 15,000 to 20,000 visitors making their way to Borja to witness Giménez’s work. Mayor Arilla honored her legacy, describing her as a “strong woman” who faced significant challenges with “sacrifice, courage, and steadfastness.”
Giménez’s restoration is not the only instance of artistic misadventures in Spain. In a similar incident six years later, a local priest commissioned a schoolteacher to restore a priceless 16th-century statue of St. George. The result, which left locals dismayed, further ignited discussions about the importance of professional conservation in preserving cultural heritage.
Cecilia Giménez’s unique journey from amateur restorer to cultural phenomenon serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of art and the enduring impact of community engagement in preserving local history. Her legacy will likely continue to inspire both laughter and reflection for years to come.
