A father was brutally murdered following a meeting with his alleged assailant in Chelmsford, Essex. On November 19, 2024, Cumali Turhan, aged 45, was seen on CCTV engaging in conversation with Ceyhan Dinler before the two men moved to a nearby bar. In a tragic turn of events, Cumali was later stabbed and tortured, suffering horrific injuries, including the severing of his tongue.

The incident took place at the Barista bar on Duke Street, only a short distance from the local police station. Following the attack, Dinler fled the UK, returning to his home country of Turkey the next day. The chilling details of this case have been highlighted in the Channel 4 documentary “Catching a Killer: Buried Truths,” which explores the investigation surrounding Cumali’s murder.

Detective Chief Inspector Louise Metcalfe, who led the operation, described the discovery of Cumali’s remains as shocking. His body was located 45 days after his death at the Enovert landfill site in Stanway, approximately 20 miles from the scene of the crime. This marked what is believed to be the first instance of a police search recovering a body from a dump in the UK.

The police operation involved significant resources, with over 1,650 officer shifts and searches conducted at ten different locations. The gruesome nature of the murder was further highlighted by the revelation that parts of Cumali’s body, including the tip of his tongue and part of his genitals, were discarded in a bin, indicating a deliberate act of torture.

CCTV footage from The Glove pub captured Dinler calling Cumali multiple times before their encounter. Witnesses reported a “heated” conversation followed by a handshake, suggesting a premeditated arrangement between the two men. Prosecutors believe that Cumali was stabbed in the neck after being subjected to severe physical abuse.

In connection to the case, Ciprian Ilie, a 44-year-old Romanian national, was sentenced to seven years in prison last October for aiding the offender and obstructing a lawful burial. Ilie was arrested after confessing to cleaning the bar post-murder and claimed he was coerced by Dinler, who threatened him with a knife.

The aftermath of this brutal murder has left a profound impact on Cumali’s family. The mother of his daughter revealed the couple had separated following the death of their son at a young age. Just before his death, Cumali sent a poignant text message to his ex-partner, expressing regret and sorrow for failing his family.

Essex Police are still actively seeking Dinler, collaborating with the Crown Prosecution Service to locate him and bring him to justice. Detective Chief Inspector Metcalfe emphasized the commitment of her team to ensure justice for Cumali and his family, stating, “At the heart of this case is a father who lost his life in truly horrific circumstances and a young daughter who must grow up without him.”

Sergeant Simon Gray, part of the search team, expressed hope that the documentary would showcase the dedication of law enforcement in their efforts to find Cumali. “We were faced with an incredibly challenging environment and often poor weather conditions,” he noted. “It was never lost on us that we needed to find Cumali and bring him home to his family.”

The investigation continues as authorities remain resolute in their pursuit of Dinler.
