Fire Claims 25 Lives in Goa Nightclub Tragedy, Inquiry Launched
A devastating fire at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora, Goa, has resulted in the deaths of at least 25 individuals, including several tourists. The incident occurred during the early hours of October 7, 2023, when a gas cylinder is believed to have exploded in the club’s kitchen, igniting a fierce blaze that rapidly spread throughout the venue.
Goa’s Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, confirmed that the majority of those who perished were kitchen workers, with an additional three to four victims identified as tourists. In the wake of this tragedy, Sawant expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families affected, calling the day “very painful for all of us in Goa.” He stated that the state government would conduct a thorough inquiry into the fire’s cause and whether proper fire safety protocols were adhered to.
The fire ignited around midnight, with local police confirming that emergency services worked throughout the night to bring the situation under control. According to Alok Kumar, Goa’s Director General of Police, the blaze was predominantly concentrated in the kitchen area on the ground floor. He noted that most of the bodies recovered were found near the kitchen, indicating they were likely workers at the club.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Sawant assured the public that a magisterial inquiry would be initiated to identify the cause of the fire and hold any responsible parties accountable. He emphasized that any negligence would be dealt with firmly under the law. As part of his ongoing updates on the situation, Sawant mentioned that six individuals had sustained injuries in the incident, but all were reported to be in stable condition and receiving medical care.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his sorrow over the incident, describing the fire as “deeply saddening.” He extended his thoughts to those who lost loved ones and wished for the swift recovery of the injured. Modi stated that he communicated with Chief Minister Sawant regarding the situation, assuring that the state government would provide all necessary assistance to the affected individuals.
As investigations continue, local authorities are focused on uncovering the precise circumstances that led to this tragedy. The nightclub, located in one of Goa’s most popular coastal regions, has been a favorite among both locals and tourists. The current inquiry aims to ensure that fire safety regulations and building codes were strictly followed in the venue.
