The British Foreign Office has issued a warning to tourists in Cyprus, urging them to take immediate safety precautions following a drone attack on RAF Akrotiri, which jeopardized the safety of British military personnel. This incident prompted the cancellation of 60 flights to and from Cypriot airports, raising concerns about the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

British visitors are advised to review their travel plans and ensure that their travel documents are current. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) highlighted that “regional escalation poses significant security risks and has led to travel disruption.” Tourists are encouraged to follow a set of five key recommendations to enhance their safety while on the island.

Essential Safety Steps for Tourists

According to the FCDO, the recommended steps include:

1. Reading the guidance on “how to prepare for a crisis” available on the FCDO website, which offers suggestions on emergency supplies and crisis management.
2. Signing up for FCDO Travel Advice email alerts to stay informed.
3. Monitoring local and international media for updates on the situation.
4. Registering for local information alerts and resources, while adhering to the advice of local authorities.
5. Keeping departure plans under review and ensuring travel documents remain valid.

The escalating conflict in the Middle East and Gulf states continues to create tension and uncertainty. In a related statement, former US President Donald Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the UK’s initial hesitance to allow the US to utilize its bases for potential military action against Iran, criticizing Labour leader Keir Starmer in the process.

Military Response and Evacuation Plans

In response to the heightened threat, the UK government announced the deployment of HMS Dragon, one of the Royal Navy’s six Type 45 air defense destroyers. The vessel, equipped with a Sea Viper anti-air missile system and crewed by over 200 personnel, is set to depart from Portsmouth. Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the importance of this move, stating, “We are moving quickly to further reinforce our defensive presence in the Eastern Mediterranean.”

He added that the HMS Dragon brings “world-class air defense capability,” and noted that Wildcat helicopters on board are armed with Martlet missiles to counter the growing drone threat. Healey expressed pride in the professionalism and bravery of British Armed Forces personnel, who have been actively engaged in protecting allies and British interests in the region.

Additionally, the Foreign Secretary confirmed that a government charter flight is scheduled to depart from Muscat, Oman, “in the coming days” to facilitate the return of vulnerable British nationals.

The FCDO continues to advise against travel to numerous countries due to the ongoing conflicts, including popular destinations such as Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. As tensions remain high, it is crucial for travelers to stay informed and vigilant regarding their safety while abroad.
