Grieving Widow Honors Late Husband with 50ft Christmas Tree
A widow has paid tribute to her late husband by decorating a Christmas tree they planted together in 1979, which has now grown to over 50 feet tall. Avril Rowlands, 80, and her late husband, Christopher, planted the fir tree for their first Christmas in their new home. More than four decades later, the tree stands proudly above their four-bedroom detached house in Inkberrow, Worcestershire.
Every December since 2004, the couple used a cherry picker to adorn the tree with thousands of festive lights. Following Christopher’s death from emphysema in March, Avril has committed to continuing this cherished tradition in his memory. She expressed her sentiments, stating, “I’m decorating the tree in honour of Chris this year because he loved the spectacle.”
This year’s display will feature thousands of LED lights, a shift from the Tungsten light bulbs used previously. Last year’s bulbs were blown off in strong winds, but a local firm generously donated the new, sturdier LEDs.
Community Gathering for the Lighting Ceremony
The festive event attracted around 2,000 attendees over the weekend, who gathered at Avril’s home to witness the tree’s illumination. This remarkable tree is the only source of light in a village notable for its lack of street lighting. It has gained recognition as a local landmark on Google and boasts five-star reviews from visitors.
Avril, a retired television writer, remarked, “People say that seeing the tree switched on is the start of their Christmas, which is just lovely.” Reflecting on the tree’s longevity, she added, “We never expected that when we moved in all those years ago and planted the tree in the garden that almost 50 years later, it would still be going strong.”
Over the years, Avril and Christopher have raised over £25,000 for various charities by accepting donations from those who come to see the tree. This year, she hopes to raise funds for Asthma and Lung UK, paying homage to Christopher’s memory with every contribution.
The tree’s inspiring story not only highlights the enduring love between Avril and Christopher but also emphasizes the spirit of community that has blossomed around this remarkable fir. As the festive season approaches, the tree continues to stand as a beacon of hope and remembrance, bringing joy and light to those who gather to celebrate.
