Gunmen Open Fire at Bondi Beach, Leaving 12 Dead and 29 Injured

A tragic shooting at Bondi Beach has resulted in at least 12 fatalities and 29 injuries, including two police officers and a child. The incident occurred on December 10, 2023, around 18:47 local time during a Hanukkah celebration that drew over a thousand attendees to the area. New South Wales Police have classified the shooting as a terrorist attack targeting the Jewish community.

Harrowing footage from the scene shows crowds fleeing in panic as a barrage of gunfire erupted. Witnesses reported hearing a series of shots, accompanied by screams and police sirens as officers rushed to the location. The attack took place in the Archer Park area, where families had gathered to celebrate the first day of the festival of lights.

According to police, two gunmen opened fire on the unsuspecting crowd. One suspect was shot dead at the scene, while the other, identified as Naveed Akram, is currently in police custody. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns described the shooting as a targeted antisemitic act, stating that the joyous occasion was “shattered by this horrifying evil attack.” He commended the bravery of both law enforcement and civilians who assisted others in escaping.

In the aftermath, police declared the incident a terrorist act, discovering several improvised explosive devices in a vehicle connected to the deceased gunman on Campbell Parade, near the beach. Bomb disposal units were deployed to ensure the area was secure and to rule out any further threats.

New South Wales Police Commissioner Malcolm Lanyon reported that those injured were in varying conditions, with some suffering serious injuries. He urged the public to remain calm as investigations continue. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the shooting, labeling it as “an act of evil, antisemitism, terrorism” and emphasized that an attack on Jewish Australians is an attack on the entire nation.

Authorities have appealed to the public for any information or footage related to the incident as investigations are ongoing. A senior law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Akram’s residence in Bonnyrigg is currently being searched by police.
