Iran Criticizes UN and EU for Inaction in Middle East Crisis
Iran has publicly condemned the United Nations and the European Union for their perceived inaction regarding the escalating crisis in the Middle East. During a media briefing in Abuja, Gholamreza Mahdavi Raja, Iran’s Ambassador to Nigeria, expressed concerns that the silence of these major international institutions undermines their role in promoting global peace and security.
The ambassador highlighted the absence of decisive action from global bodies, asserting that it has emboldened aggression in the region. He criticized the United Nations Security Council for not convening an urgent session to address the growing tensions. “The whole region is facing conflict, yet there has been no urgent meeting of the Security Council, no strong reaction and no clear statement,” Mahdavi Raja stated. He questioned the credibility of institutions designed to maintain stability, emphasizing their lack of response to current conflicts.
In his remarks, the Iranian envoy pointed out that the failure to address these issues suggests that international institutions are swayed by the interests of powerful nations, particularly the United States. He warned that this perception could lead to a loss of legitimacy for these organizations. “If international bodies remain silent in the face of such developments, they risk losing their credibility,” he added.
Mahdavi Raja also accused Western powers of pursuing destabilizing policies across the Middle East, citing ongoing conflicts in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Iraq as evidence of broader geopolitical tensions. He defended Iran’s recent military actions targeting American bases in the region, framing them as acts of self-defense against attacks on Iranian leadership. “Our response is defensive. We are targeting military installations used against our country,” he said, clarifying that these strikes were directed solely at military facilities.
The ambassador reassured neighbouring Gulf states that Iran’s military operations would focus on American facilities within their territories and not on civilian areas. He warned that the ongoing crisis poses significant risks to the global economy, especially concerning energy markets. The potential instability around the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical conduit for global oil and gas supplies, could disrupt energy shipments, impacting prices and transportation worldwide. “Any conflict in this region will inevitably affect oil prices, transportation, and the global economy,” Mahdavi Raja explained.
While reiterating that Iran does not seek war, he emphasized the country’s commitment to defending its sovereignty and national security. He argued that the responsibility for de-escalation lies with those who initiated the conflict. Despite his criticisms of international institutions, the Iranian ambassador expressed Iran’s desire for regional stability and peaceful coexistence. He cautioned that continued inaction from global bodies could exacerbate tensions across the Middle East.
In summary, Iran’s strong criticism of the UN and EU highlights growing frustrations with international responses to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. As tensions rise, the implications for both regional stability and global economic conditions remain significant.
