Karen Carney Reveals Strictly Woes Ahead of Final Dance Showdown
Karen Carney, a former England footballer, has shared her struggles with the high-heeled footwear mandated by the production team of Strictly Come Dancing, just before the show’s final. Carney, 38, confided in Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill during a podcast episode that her attempts to avoid this key regulation were met with stern warnings from BBC executives.
As Carney and her dance partner Carlos Gu prepare to compete for the coveted Glitterball trophy, she revealed that her standout performance in the opening week was largely due to wearing flat shoes, which allowed her to dance more comfortably. On the podcast, she explained, “I think the Jive, the first dance, even the shoes were like football boots. So it was really comfortable and I was really comfortable in them.” However, her subsequent dances required her to adapt to heels, which posed significant challenges.
Footwear Dilemma and Producer Reactions
During the podcast, Carney recalled the moment she received a sharp reprimand from the show’s producers when she expressed her desire to skip the heels for one dance. “I was begging, I was like, ‘oh I hope they don’t come,'” she admitted. The producers informed her that wearing her preferred black shoes would lead to lower scores from the judges. “They were like, ‘if you wear your black shoes, which would look horrendous, you will get marked down’,” she said. Carney questioned whether her performance would improve significantly if she felt more comfortable, but the response remained firm: “you cannot, it’s, like, the rules, you’ve got to wear them.”
Despite these obstacles, Carney’s performances have captivated both the judging panel and audiences alike. Her encounters with online criticism as a football pundit have also taken a toll on her self-esteem. “For probably the last five or six years I’ve been open and honest about how I’ve been crushed quite a lot in terms of my confidence,” she noted. “Part of me was like, ‘if I could ever get the opportunity to throw myself into what I felt would be my heart, I knew that Strictly would be the thing that would fix me.”
Final Showdown Awaits
As the final approaches, Carney and Gu will face stiff competition from fellow contestants George Clarke and his partner Alexis Warr, as well as Amber Davies and her partner Nikita Kuzmin. The final of Strictly Come Dancing is set to air tonight at 19:00 on BBC One and iPlayer, promising an exciting conclusion to this year’s series.
With the Glitterball trophy within sight, Carney’s journey has not only showcased her resilience but also her determination to overcome personal challenges in a high-pressure environment. As the spotlight shines brightly, viewers will be eager to see if her hard work and dedication pay off on the dance floor.
