Sir Keir Starmer is set to deliver a significant address from Downing Street this morning, January 19, 2024, following escalating tensions regarding tariffs imposed by Donald Trump. The U.S. President has threatened to impose steep tariffs on the UK and other European nations until an agreement is reached for the United States to purchase Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark.

In response to Trump’s remarks, Starmer has firmly stated that it is “wrong” to apply tariffs on allies, especially those supporting collective security efforts within NATO. The Prime Minister is expected to outline the UK’s commitment to collaborating with its allies and emphasize that the country will be “led by our values.” A government source indicated that Starmer will also address his determination to safeguard the security, living standards, and future of the British populace.

Tariff Threats and Diplomatic Calls

Trump’s proposed tariffs include a 10% charge on all goods exported to the U.S. from the UK, set to escalate to 25% starting June 1, 2024. This measure also applies to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland. The U.S. President justified these tariffs by claiming that they are necessary until a deal for the purchase of Greenland is finalized.

On Sunday, Starmer engaged in a series of diplomatic calls with several key figures, including Trump himself, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and NATO Chief Mark Rutte. During these discussions, he reiterated that the future of Greenland should be decided by Denmark and the Greenlandic people, underlining the importance of security in the High North as a priority for all NATO allies.

A spokesperson from Downing Street remarked, “He also said that applying tariffs on allies for pursuing the collective security of NATO allies is wrong.” This sentiment reflects the UK’s commitment to maintaining strong international relationships despite the current tensions.

Trump’s Criticism of Denmark

Earlier on Monday, Trump criticized Denmark for allegedly failing to protect Greenland from Russian threats, stating on his Truth Social platform, “NATO has been telling Denmark, for 20 years, that ‘you have to get the Russian threat away from Greenland.’ Unfortunately, Denmark has been unable to do anything about it. Now it is time, and it will be done!!!”

The U.S. President also expressed discontent with a recent Danish-led military exercise conducted in Greenland, suggesting that the intentions behind the operation were unclear. As tensions continue to rise, Starmer’s address is anticipated to provide clarity on the UK’s stance and strategy moving forward.
