Kevin Sinfield Exceeds Fundraising Goal Ahead of Final Marathons

Kevin Sinfield has surpassed his fundraising target of £777,777 with two days remaining in his ambitious challenge to support motor neurone disease (MND) research. The former rugby star is currently undertaking a grueling schedule of running seven ultra-marathons in seven days. As of last night, the fundraising total reached an impressive £813,000, with Sinfield still set to run two more 27.9-mile marathons.

On December 5, England rugby union coach Steve Borthwick joined Sinfield during his fifth run across Cumbria. Borthwick praised Sinfield as an “inspiration” who rallies support for the MND community. “What Kev and his team are doing to make the MND community feel loved and cared for is remarkable,” he said.

Despite acknowledging that his body is feeling the strain, Sinfield, 45, remains focused on his goal. He will continue his challenge across Scotland on December 6, culminating in a highly emotional final leg in Leeds on December 7. This journey holds special significance for Sinfield, who was teammates with Rob Burrow, a former player who passed away last year after a courageous five-year battle with MND. Sinfield’s commitment to this cause was highlighted during the 2023 Leeds Marathon, where a poignant photo captured the moment he carried Burrow across the finish line.

Sinfield has previously completed seven ultra marathons in a week on five occasions, raising over £11 million for MND research. In recognition of his selfless contributions, a campaign has been launched by the Daily Star advocating for Sinfield to receive a knighthood. Nearly 50,000 individuals have signed an online petition in support of this honor. Notably, 18-year-old darts champion Luke Littler, a rugby league fan, has also contributed significantly to the fundraising efforts, donating thousands from his winnings.

Sinfield’s dedication to the cause resonates deeply with many, including Burrow’s widow, Lindsey Burrow, who believes his efforts are deserving of one of Britain’s highest honors.
