Manchester United Eyes Antoine Semenyo Amid £60 Million Clause
Manchester United is exploring the possibility of signing Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo at a discounted rate, thanks to a release clause in his contract. The 25-year-old Ghanaian has made a significant impact in the Premier League this season, amassing eight goals and three assists. Notably, Semenyo will not participate in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations due to Ghana’s failure to qualify.
Initially, reports indicated that Semenyo’s price tag was set at £100 million. However, it has since been confirmed that he has a release clause of £60 million, with an additional £5 million in performance-related add-ons. This clause is valid for the first ten days of the January transfer window, which opens on January 1, 2024.
Potential for a Strategic Move
United has reportedly engaged in direct discussions with Bournemouth regarding Semenyo’s potential transfer. Ruben Amorim, the manager of Manchester United, views Semenyo as a versatile option who could fill the role of a left-wing-back, similar to how Amad Diallo operates on the right flank.
Despite United’s substantial investment in the summer transfer window—spending over £200 million on players like Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko—there are concerns about the current squad’s ability to meet tactical demands. Amorim has expressed doubts about the capabilities of Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu in fulfilling his expectations for the left side.
However, competition for Semenyo’s signature is fierce. Premier League rivals such as Manchester City, Liverpool, and Tottenham Hotspur have also shown interest in the forward, complicating United’s pursuit.
Semenyo’s Commitment to Bournemouth
Despite the potential for a transfer, Semenyo has not confirmed his desire to leave Bournemouth. The forward signed a five-year contract with the club last summer after a period of speculation regarding his future. When questioned about his plans in early November, Semenyo stated, “I try to stay present as much as I can. You see the news all the time, I see it as well, I’m not oblivious, but I try to keep focused.”
He expressed satisfaction with his current situation, emphasizing, “I’m enjoying my football here. If I’m not scoring goals, all of that goes away.” Semenyo acknowledged the interest from other clubs but reaffirmed his commitment to Bournemouth, citing the team’s positive trajectory and recent signings as reasons for his continued stay.
As the January transfer window approaches, the fate of Semenyo remains uncertain. With a release clause available for a limited time, Manchester United will need to act quickly if they wish to secure the forward’s services.
