Manchester United Pursues Benjamin Sesko with £74 Million Offer
Manchester United is moving closer to securing the signing of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko with a bid that totals €75 million (£65.3 million), plus an additional €10 million (£8.7 million) in potential add-ons. This development comes despite a competing offer from Newcastle United, which is believed to be more lucrative. However, sources indicate that Sesko’s personal preference could ultimately influence his choice, especially as United seeks to rebound from a challenging previous season under head coach Ruben Amorim.
As negotiations progress, Sesko has been training separately from his teammates this week, a situation confirmed by Leipzig in a statement released on Wednesday. The club noted: “Wednesday squad update: Andrija Maksimovic is back in Leipzig, but is training individually today. Benjamin Sesko and Lukas Klostermann are also working individually.”
In a recent update, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano suggested that Leipzig might extend negotiations in an effort to maximize the transfer fee. “Christopher Vivell is working on this deal because he knows the Red Bull group very well, but also Jason Wilcox is being crucial in these conversations and negotiations,” Romano stated on his YouTube channel. He emphasized that adjustments might be made to the structure of the add-ons to secure a more guaranteed portion of the transfer fee for Leipzig.
There is optimism within United that strong relations with Leipzig will facilitate a swift conclusion to the negotiations. Romano remarked, “There is a feeling that RB Leipzig want to extend the negotiations because they want to get the best price possible. Manchester United have a good relationship with Leipzig, so they hope this will not be very long.” The two clubs are reportedly in direct contact, and Sesko is anticipated to become a Manchester United player soon.
The potential arrival of Sesko may have implications for current United forward Rasmus Hojlund. Reports indicate that Hojlund may be forced out if Sesko completes his transfer to Old Trafford. Although Hojlund expressed intentions to remain at United during comments made in Chicago last week, sources close to the player acknowledge that he could seek a move before the transfer deadline on September 1. Hojlund was acquired by United in a £72 million deal from Atalanta two years ago.
Christopher Vivell, United’s director of recruitment, has a history with Sesko, having worked with him during his time at RB Salzburg. Vivell has described Sesko as “among the game’s top young talents,” highlighting the striker’s speed, aerial prowess, and technical skills. “He’s extremely quick, has a great jump on him, and is strong in the air. Benjamin is a real goalscorer, who despite his 1.95m (6ft 4in) height is mobile and technically strong,” Vivell noted.
Manchester United initially attempted to sign Sesko three years ago, but a £21 million deal was already in place for him to move from RB Salzburg after four successful years in Austria. Speaking about the interest from United in a 2023 interview with The Telegraph, Sesko remarked, “The thing is, I was not really into that kind of conversation, but I think it was better just to come here.”
As the situation unfolds, Manchester United fans are encouraged to stay informed about the latest developments regarding Sesko’s potential transfer. The club is committed to providing comprehensive coverage and analysis, ensuring supporters do not miss any significant news as the summer transfer window progresses.
