Manchester United Pursues Joao Gomes in £44 Million Transfer Deal

Manchester United is reportedly optimistic about finalizing a transfer deal for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes during the January 2024 transfer window. The club has held discussions regarding a potential move, with the transfer fee expected to be around £44 million. Gomes, who joined Wolves from Flamengo in January 2023 for £16.4 million, has become a key player, making 93 appearances in the Premier League, scoring six goals and providing two assists.

Gomes, 24, has stood out in a struggling Wolves team this season, drawing attention from Manchester United as they seek to enhance their midfield options. Reports from Brazilian media outlet Globo indicate that the player has four-and-a-half years remaining on his contract with Wolves, but a winter exit is being discussed. There is a general sense of optimism among all parties that this transaction could be completed by the end of January 2024.

Ruben Amorim, the manager of Wolves, had previously indicated that the team was looking to bolster its midfield following a missed opportunity to sign a player during the summer transfer window. The failure to secure Carlos Baleba, a top target who instead remained at Brighton, has intensified Manchester United’s desire to bring in Gomes. Other midfielders linked to the club include Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson, and Angelo Stiller.

While Casemiro has established himself as a vital part of the midfield alongside Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United is keen to strengthen this position, especially given the limited playing time for Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo. The team’s recent performance has been inconsistent, as they faced a setback with a 1-0 loss against Everton, despite the opposition being reduced to ten men for the majority of the match.

In the aftermath of that defeat, Amorim expressed disappointment with his team’s performance, stating, “I think they were the better team with 11. They defend really well with 10 men for 70 minutes. So I think we deserved to lose; we didn’t play well, we didn’t play with the right intensity.”

Looking ahead, Manchester United faces a challenging fixture against an in-form Crystal Palace on Sunday. The club has struggled at Selhurst Park, failing to secure a win since July 2020, with three draws and two losses in their last five visits.
