Mother’s Battle for Care Amid Decades of Excruciating Pain
A mother from Gloucestershire, Naomi Smith, has shared her distressing journey through decades of crippling jaw pain, feeling “ignored” by the National Health Service (NHS). At 47, she can now only open her mouth 14mm wide, severely impacting her ability to eat or drink. Naomi began experiencing symptoms at the age of 18, with teeth grinding and jaw pain escalating to what she describes as “unbearable” discomfort by 2014.
Naomi’s condition has not only caused her immense physical suffering but has also led to a significant deterioration in her quality of life. She reported vomiting up to 30 times a day as a result of her pain, which has spread throughout her body. Despite numerous hospital visits and consultations, she has received a range of diagnoses—ranging from fibromyalgia to functional bowel disease—but claims that none have adequately addressed her severe jaw issues.
In 2025, Naomi finally received a diagnosis of severe temporomandibular joint disorder and severe jaw arthritis. Her partner, Darryl Brooks, a 52-year-old painter and decorator, is now seeking support for her to undergo potentially life-changing jaw-replacement surgery. He has initiated a GoFundMe campaign with a target of £95,000 to cover the costs of the surgery, travel, and lost earnings, raising only £140 at the time of this report.
Years of Frustration and Physical Decline
Naomi’s health challenges began in 1996 when she first sought help for her jaw issues. Initially prescribed a mouthguard, her condition rapidly deteriorated. By 2014, she struggled to maintain a normal diet and began losing weight at an alarming rate, dropping three stone in a few months. The pain became so debilitating that she relied on a liquid diet, which ultimately led to malnutrition and a bowel blockage in 2019.
Throughout this period, Naomi faced skepticism from healthcare providers. In one instance, she recounted a medical professional labeling her as “hysterical,” suggesting that her symptoms were imagined. She expressed frustration with the healthcare system’s inability to provide a clear diagnosis: “I kept thinking they had the answer, and then they’d tell me I wasn’t feeling what I was feeling.”
By 2024, the toll of her suffering forced Naomi to leave her position as a children’s social, emotional, and mental health tutor. “It just got impossible. I’m absolutely devastated,” she said. As the sole earner, Darryl now provides support to Naomi while managing their household, a situation he describes as increasingly difficult.
Seeking Answers and Support
Naomi’s journey through the NHS has been marked by countless appointments across various specialties, including gastroenterology and rheumatology. Despite being referred to multiple clinics, her pain persisted, and her conditions were often misattributed to functional disorders. In 2020, she was referred to a clinic for medically unexplained symptoms, where she was again told she might have fibromyalgia.
In April 2019, Naomi was hospitalized due to complications from her condition, yet the treatment she received did not bring relief. “It feels like life or death now,” she reflected on her situation, emphasizing the emotional toll her health struggles have taken on her family.
Despite finally receiving a diagnosis in 2025, Naomi continues to face long waiting periods for surgery through the NHS. She has been informed that an arthroscopy, a procedure to repair her jaw, could take up to four years to schedule. Meanwhile, she has sought private treatments, spending thousands on options like Botox and acupuncture, but none have alleviated her suffering.
A spokesperson from Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust acknowledged the challenges Naomi has faced and expressed regret over the delays in her diagnosis. They assured that her case is being taken seriously, with plans for further consultations to explore treatment options.
As Naomi and Darryl navigate these challenges, they remain hopeful for a future without pain. To support their fundraising efforts for the necessary surgery, donations can be made through their GoFundMe page.
